Quality and service issues with the Honda CRV

My wife's 2002 CRV was having problem starting. It was a unique problem: the SUV would start all the time, but every 2 to 3 weeks it would not start. If you tried 3 times, then it would start up and start fine for another 2 to 3 weeks. We took our SUV to Coggin Honda of Jacksonville (where we bought it) to have it fixed. They determained the starter was bad. The warranty had just expired and I know a starter should last at least 6 or more years. After asking about this, they contacted American Honda, and Honda agreed to pay half of the cost of the starter. I paid the other half and all labor costs.

They had our car for 3 days to fix this problem!

The next weekend my wife and I went on vacation and the same problem occured.

After the holidays we took the CRV back to Coggin and they tested the problem. They told me the battery was the problem. Charged me for the new battery and labor cost. After asking the service manager Shawn Mickey about a refund on the portion that I had paid for the starter ,since the problem was identical and not a normal occuring problem and it was clear the battery that was the solution to both problems, he refused. I have worked on cars in the past, and know that you always start with the least expensive part to find the solution, but Coggin started with the most expensive. They did not lose any profit, due to American Honda paying for half and myself picking up the other half plus labor cost.

My wife and I bought 2 Hondas (2002 CRV and 2004 Element) and choose these over the simular Toyota models b/c we always admired the qualitly and service that was "Honda". As the CRV was our first expirience of owning a Honda, we are questioning our purchase.

I would like American Honda to refund our portion of the starter, $400 plus labor. If possible, I would like Honda to reconsider the high rating you gave to the dealership, Coggin Honda of Jacksonville as it has clearly not lived up to it. They state that they are the President's Award winner and I feel that's misleading.

I also had a negative experience at Coggin Honda of Jacksonville. My
Honda Accord's check engine light came on - I paid something like $900
for them to do the 60K preventative Maintenance and change out the O2
sensor (which they diagnosed as the problem) and about $130 of the
$900 went towards adding new refrigerant to the AC (which so far is
still working ok). They were clearly overpriced which I realized
after shopping around, but I figured the dealer would do a better job
of fixing the problem. Less than a week after leaving the dealer the
engine began misfiring and the check engine light came on again.
Coggin wanted another $500 to change the spark plugs (they said one
was cross-threaded) and they said that would be a "start on solving
the problem". I went ahead and bought OEM platinum spark plugs myself
on ebay for $30 and changed them, there was no crossthread - and added
a $6 fuel treatment and the check engine light has not come back on.
After calling and leaving a message there has yet to be any follow-up
(weeks later). Awful experience, never going to this dealer again.

The President's award is one that is issued to dealers on Honda's
behalf for sales and service. I happen to know this store did a great
number of volume and had an overall great number of high Customer
Satisfaction Index. Doesn't mean they are the greatest, but it is a
distinct award that allows this dealership to recieve special
incentives that arent offered to other dealerships( hush dealer monies
used to promote special units).
As far as your situationis concerned, the battery should of first been
replaced but probably wasn't since it probably had a full charge when
you brought it in. Your service advisor should of warned you about
this, but since Honda paid for half of the cost of the starter they
went with this option. The battery isn't covered under warranty so
you're stuck with that bill and Honda wont refund your portion of the
starter since after all you did receive a new one. They had your car
for 3 days because they had to send your original starter to Honda and
then Honda sends them back a new replacement starter.
