ADA Laws and Seeing Eye Dogs

Posted Tue June 19, 2012 10:20 pm, by Alexis P. written to Ann Taylor Stores Corporation

Write a Letter to this Company

To Whom It May Concern:

http://consumerist.com/2012/06/ann-taylor-tells-my-blind-mother-her-guide-dog-isnt-allowed-in-the-store.html

Ann Taylor refused to let a woman with a SEEING EYE DOG into their store! This is despicable and ILLEGAL, thus cannot be tolerated!

Ann Taylor needs to train management and all employees how to follow the ADA standards regarding allowing guide animals into all establishments.

Sincerely,

A. Pearlman

what the store did was wrong clearly.

however the blanket statement that you can never ban service animals
isn't entirely accurate. you actually CAN ban them, but only in
specific situations.

Mainly if the animal is misbehaving / not under control etc. Or if
the animal poses a risk.

Kinda. By "risk" I don't mean those cases where other customers whine
about "dog! health code!" etc but real risks.

Like having a guide dog in the zoo's avian enclosure. My old zoo
actually banned service dogs from that area. But they provided human
escorts so it wasn't an ADA violation. They just couldn't risk having
the birds freak out.

But... back to the main story.

I see this was at a mall. If anyone else has this happen to them in a
mall, I'd suggest contacting the mall office to let them know of the
violation.

IIRC the fines can be rather steep.

thank you for policing the world, your heroic efforts to stick your
nose into every aspect of articles where the company has already
acknowledged and dealt with the issue deserves an award.

I read the post at the Consumerist. From what I understood, the
husband of the shopper actually went back to Ann Taylor & complained.
So if Alexis P. is their daughter, I just wonder why she posted this
complaint on planetfeedback.

pretty much this - many letters we see here are just based on stuff people see in the news by PepperElf Mon June 25, 2012 @ 1:11 PM

I just don't get how someone can be so ignorant and stupid in 2012
when it comes to guide dogs and their right to be in public places.
The store employee and the manager BOTH were this dumb? That's just
ridiculous.

What is this to you? Are you her daughter? How do you know this has
not already been addressed by the offended party? And since Ann-Taylor
has spoken with the offended party, they are aware of the issue. In
all likelihood it will not happen again.
As to what ever the offended party does is up to her.
