Apple Should Stretch Promotion Dates for Loyal Customers

In April of 2009, my wife purchased a new Macbook from the Apple store, to be used for nursing school. Two weeks ago, she purchased a new 32gb iPod touch, also for nursing school (playback of recorded lectures). This morning while checking her email, she learned of the new "buy a new computer, get a free (after rebate) iPod touch" promotional offer.
Hoping to take advantage of the new offer, we drove to out local Apple store and informed an employee of our situation. He told us he would have to get the store manager, and we waited for several minutes while he did. The store manager politely explained that unless we had purchased the Macbook within the past 14 days, there was nothing she could do. She did ask if we had purchased Apple care protection plans for either the Macbook or iPod, which we did not. It sounded as though the manager was going to offer us an Apple protection plan for the Macbook and iPod in place of the rebate, but no such offer was ever made. Does purchasing an Apple care plan affect either the current rebate program or the store manager's ability to grant a rebate retroactively?
We have been an Apple loyalist family for many years now. My very first computer was an Apple IIc. We currently have an iMac in our home office, an iBook G4 laptop, and our new Macbook. In addition to the computers, I have owned a 20gb iPod, and my current 60gb iPod video. My wife has owned 2 iPod nanos, and her new iPod touch. We have also spent several thousand dollars in the iTunes store over the past several years. I even explained to the store manager that if we were able to get the rebate, I intended to use it right then to help purchase a new iMac for our office.
I understand that every promotional offer must have a start date and an end date, but I find myself feeling very frustrated that Apple cannot do more to stretch those dates, especially for consumers who have been loyal for so many years. Financially, times are very tight right now, and paying for nursing school makes them even tighter. The $229.00 rebate would have gone a long way in helping us out.
Ideally, I would like to be able to get the $229.00 rebate. A store credit would help us purchase a new iMac. I would even be happy with an iTunes credit, or an Apple care protection plan for our new Macbook and iPod touch, although I have never had the need to send any of our numerous Apple products in for repairs of any kind.
Thank you for taking the time to hear my concerns, I look forward to your response.

Yes, it is frustrating, but like Alanis Morissette says, "It's a free ride, when you already paid!"
It come down to, if they bend the rules for you, where do they cut it off at? In this instance, your purchase is more than a month before the promotion began. If this was 3 months or 6 months out, would you still believe you should be able to get the discount too?
They have to establish boundaries somewhere and it truly stinks that you missed out, but look at it this way - what if they had not put this promotion out at all? Would you not have still purchased the items?

the worst they can do is say "no"
Not sure if they'll give you a rebate...
though... as a student... i love apple but i'm not impressed by their student prices. my state college network has better discounts for the same products, and since my community college is officially part of the network now, I can get student prices from any other college in the same network.
perhaps that's something you can look around for too?

I never owned an Apple or an Ipod, what happened to the 10 dollar tape recorders?

There are much much cheaper ways to record lectures in class. A top of the line micro cassette recorder or something similar is much cheaper than an I touch.
I'm just trying to be helpful here. No doubt the new Ipod touch is fantastically awesome, but really if it is just for recording lectures, as i said, there are much cheaper alternatives

They were able to stretch the dates, by 14 days. Unfortunately you are outside that window as well. They have to draw the line somewhere.

Yes, and your wife missed qualifying for the offer by one to two months. While the timing is unfortunate for you, I think it is highly unlikely Apple will or should give you anything. As you say, there has to be start and end dates.

From what Venice posted, it sounds like you missed out on the offer. You failed to meet two of the terms.
Due to the fact that they offered a price adjustment for 14 days, that sounds like good service.
It would be like going to a grocery store a month after you got a coupon and demanding they honor it.
I seriously doubt you will get the full rebate, however they may give you a coupon or as you mention, an itunes credit of some amount.

I received the same email yesterday, May 27th, and it clearly states:
Buy a qualifying Mac and iPod with your Apple education discount from May 27, 2009, through September 8, 2009, and receive an online rebate up to $229...
It also says:
Purchase your Mac and iPod touch at the same time to qualify for your online rebate.
Not only did your wife purchase the computer last month, but she bought the iTouch at a different time. It's nice that you are loyal customers, and the manager did stretch the date to 14 days, but sometimes we just have to accept that we missed out on something and wait for the next opportunity to come along.
