iPhone Price Reduction Hurts True Apple Supporters

Posted Wed September 5, 2007 12:00 pm, by Frank P. written to Apple Computer Inc

I was excited when Apple announced the new iPhone and was willing to pay $599 since they never reduce their prices; generally enhance the next generation for the same price.

Today Apple announced a $200 price reduction after the product was out for only 60 days, that is a 30% decrease in price. So all the dedicated Apple shoppers who bought first, overpaid.

Apple should offer $200 rebates to those who paid full price.

Hey All --

I am happy to report that Apple and Amex both made good. Apple gave
early buyers a $100 credit ad Amex refunded my card for the additional
$100. Thanks Apple and Amex for working this out. That's not good
business, that's GREAT business.

That's the risk of being an early adopter. I think you may have gotten
at least $200 worth of cool points for being the first on your block
to have an iPhone, though.

I dont fell sorry for anyone who can afford to spend $600.00 for a
cell phone. Sorry. Fools and thier money are easily parted. I think
my grandma said that.

The very first ipod cost like $500 in 5gigabytes not colored as
thick as a bar soap but people both it. If you like technology you
should not complain about cost of buying one, close your eyes when you
pay then open it and enjoy what you got. The price of technology is
never right, it borders on constant change.

I'm sorry for the loss. I bought a razr when they first came out and
spent $300 on it, now they are $49.99. It happens to us all.

I just read on CNN.com that they are offering a $100 credit to those
customers who purchased the 8GB iphone outside of the 14 day return
policy (there are of course stipulations - you had to have purchased
directly through Apple or AT&T and if you've already gotten some sort
of rebate (most likely through AT&T) then you aren't eligible...).
You can go to their website for more details.

This is due to the floods of emails they have received about the
drastic price cut...

They are offering the $200 but it has to be unopened. For the rest of
you suck it up that's what happens with cell phones and pretty much
everything else electronic.

I don't agree with all of the posters that say you have no right to be
ticked. I'm ticked off alright!! I purchased my iPhone eight days
ago! Imagine all of the people that purchased them yesterday. They
have a new-in-the-box phone that one day later would have received a
$200 lower price tag. The people it hurts are the ones that take the
risk, purchase Apple's new products and promote them by word and
action.
A few free downloads on iTunes would be in order.

almost EVERYTHING goes down in price. Your just being greedy. I doubt
you'll get anything.

Sorry you are out of luck. You had to be one of those people that had
to have a new item when it first marketed. You thought the $599 price
was a fair price at the time and bought it not because of the price
but because you had to have the "new widget". Given the nature of
electronics - being higher priced when they are first made available
to the public and then go cheaper later, you should have waited if the
price was an issue.

So Sony should refund my husband, who paid $700 for a PS3, in the
amount of $250? Because he bought the PS3 when it first came out, and
now they are going for $450.

No, he's not looking for a rebate, because he had one before anyone
else, and to him it was worth the extra $250 (and nights spent on the
couch for spending that much on a stupid video game).

I know Apple typically doesn't drop prices and I didn't think of this
until I read it in an article about this very subject....the iphone is
different than the ipod as it is a cell phone. All cell phones come
out at outragous prices then dramatically drop. The article used the
example of the Razor - it came out for $499 and can now be purchased
for under $100. Cell phones have a much short lifespan than an ipod or
a mac computer...so while I understand your frustration I don't think
rebates for 200 bucks is a reasonable request. When you bought the
product for $599 you felt it was worth $599 or your wouldn't have
bought it.

by RowdyRetailer Posted Thu September 6, 2007 @ 10:41 AM

This is simple. New items when they come out almost always cost more.
Then the price drops, this is supply and demand. The reason it is
high to begin with is to recover the cost to make the item.

This applies to a box of cereal too. When it first hits the market it
is at full price, then the price goes down.

Boy, that sucks....I hope you get a rebate of some type...I would ask
for a bunch of I tunes credits.

I know how ya feel though, as a gamer, I buy the new consoles the week
or day of launch, and if nintendo went and dropped the price of the
Wii by a hundred bucks, 2 months later, I would be mad as hell.

Apple is a good company and they more than likely will make things
right....you can always go the way of a class action suit.

Perhaps you'd feel better if you just thought of the extra $200 you
paid as some kind of a sucker tax.

Er, wait. That probably won't make you feel any better at all. My
apologies.

I too bought my iPhone on iDay (2 actually) and although I do not
agree with the request for a rebate, I do agree that a 33% price drop
in 2 months is a hard pill to swallow. Very unlike Apple and is
creating a PR nightmare for them.

Would I have purchased when I did if I had known then that the price
would drop so quickly, probably yes. Am I just a little upset to look
"foolish" probably yes again. Will I get over it, absolutely.

I enjoy using my phone more and more each day and have no regrets.

Well, I read all the replies below mine and here is my take on the
situation:

Apple did not sell as many iphones initially that they wanted to and
were forced by market dynamics to lower the price.

As far as your request for a rebate, give me a break. You knew the
price prior to purchasing the phone. You knew the price and bought it
anyway.

I laugh at most of these iphone proponents. I have been using apples
for about 20 years now. Most of these "loyal" apple consumers are
people who bought ipods. Well, Apple has been around alot longer than
you think and they have made plenty of mistakes in their history. And
Steve Jobs is not god. His self indulgent press conferences are
getting old as well.

Props to Apple for lowering the price on the iphone. Props to Apple on
the new ipod. A life-long supply of condoms to the original poster so
we can end the era of his stupidity here and now.

And you're not dedicated, just a moron. You got caught up in all the
hype and you lost out. Here's a new word for you: cope.

I am feeling civic minded so here is a link to help you out:

Welcome to the world of SUPPLY and DEMAND my friend.

On a side note, if Apple wants to sell more iPhones, they need to
abandon AT&T...AT&T SUCKS!

I think it's a bit odd for Apple to reduce the price and so early
too.
Actually give it a minute and you may see a rebate or possibly a free
upgrade or coupon for such and such amount of money off your phone
bill.
Apple almost always makes things right in the end.
Be sure to give them feed back on this if you haven't already

This is called marketing. Many more people will buy something that big
in the first two months on hype, and then they need to lower the price
to continue good sales. Apple is a company, they really don't care.
