Invalid charge without a trace of evidence

I am writing about my experience with applebees in Midlothian, Virginia off of Hull Street Road. I went there on March 14. I first would like to say that the food was great. What happened was I was having food and drinks with a friend of mine that I hadn't seen in 2 years, before I left my house to waste time I went online and checked all of my financial accounts, where I am going with this is that when my dinner was over and he gave us our checks I handed over my credit card and my friend gave him her money shortly after that the server comes back to me and said sorry to be the carrier of bad news but your card declined which was a complete shock because I do not hand over cards that have no money on them plus I had just looked at all of my accounts before I left my house so I knew that couldn't be right. So first let me tell you how embarrassing that was too me knowing this couldn't be correct. My check total was $34 and some change. So I gave the server $28 cash and told him to run the remaining on the same card I gave him originally and I put the tip on that as well. That came back fine. Well I was still completely embarrassed and it just didn't make since to me. Well the next morning I check my account and I have two charges one for $36.17 which wasn't even my original charge and the one I signed for after I gave him part cash. I let it sit there pending on my account for 5 days thinking maybe they made a mistake and they caught it and it was reversed well that didn't happen. I called on Wednesday the 19th and spoke with a manager named Jenny who looked into it and said that they can not tell me why my card was charged for that and there were no paper trail of any transaction for that amount. This is what I find disturbing. How does someones card get charged with absolutely no trace of any charge in the restuarant when I can show you on my account that it is coming out of my account. I do not know if there is a way the server can manage to work the system some how and pocket money or that maybe a better system should be into place. I am was able to call the card company and have the charge reversed but this still makes me feel unsafe about using my cards at the restuarant.
