No service at Applebees

Posted Mon August 28, 2006, by samantha g. written to Applebee's International, Inc.

About a month ago, my boyfriend and I went to Applebee's. We were seated and asked for our drink orders. We ordered Mountain Dews, nothing from the bar. Twenty minutes passed and we never received our drinks. That's unacceptable behavior for a restaurant. We both work in the food business also, so we know how it is when it gets busy, but 20 minutes for soft drinks? We ended up walking out and no one bothered to stop us or say anything. We have not been back since. I never called to complain because I figured that it wouldn't be worth my time.

I would like to receive a free meal for both of us.

We are not particularly fans of microwaved food because we can do that
at home. However in an Evening of laziness we went to Applebee's.

We told them, party of 2.....they said 20 minutes.

We looked and there were 4 tables, 2 tops only, open.

There was a party of 6, 4, 3 and 5 waiting.

We were told that we could not be seated until all parties in front of
us were seated. Even though they could NOT use the 2 tops in any way,
we could still not be seated because it would be unfair.

We laughed, shook our heads and left.

you didn't speak to a manager so no you don't get a free meal.
It is applebee's and they will hire anybody off the street to work in
their miserable establishments. If you want good service go to a non
corporate restaurant.

HAHAHA who would honestly wait 20 minutes for a drink????

Okay, okay, people..... I give up. I never expected to receive free
meals, but that is what I would expect, or what I would do had that
been my business. That was also the first complaint letter I ever
wrote, so give me a break.

I while back, me and my boyfriend went to the Applebees in Warner
Robins, GA. We took his mom and niece. We were seated, but waited
about 10 minutes just for the guy to come out to take our drink
orders, and another 20 to order our food. It took the guy a half hour
to bring us our drinks and he NEVER brought out our food. So we ended
up leaving in a fit of rage. A week later, my boyfriend and I went
again to the same one. This time we went at about 9:30 when the crowd
was dead (the previous incident was at 12 noon). We were seated and
waited 20 minutes for someone to get our drink orders, but still no
one came. I asked to speak to the manager, and waited 10 minutes until
he finally came to our table. We told hime about both incidents and
all he did was apologize and give us two five dollar coupons. Then he
got up and left our table like we were doing nothing but taking up his
time. I called the Applebees hotline the next day and all they did was
send us two more five dollar coupons. What a rip.

What a rip? by tickytack Fri September 1, 2006 @ 9:26 AM

by spring dallah Posted Fri September 1, 2006 @ 2:22 AM

ok, so let me get this straight: (1) it took 20 minutes for your soft
drink order to come, (+2) you walked out, so i have to assume you
didn't order any food, (+3) you than have not been back since, and you
(+4) never bothered to call and complain, (+5) nor approach the
manager while you were at the restaurant.

now when you add all the +'s they don't = A FREE MEAL

I have a few questions about this letter.

1-Did you even order food?

2-If so did you eat it?

3-If you didn't order food/ ate it/ or there was nothing wrong with
the food then why should you get free food?

4-Where was this Applebees at?

5-Why was it a waste of time to complain a month ago but isn't now?

6-Why didn't you speak up at the time (at least tell one of the
waiters you haven't gotten your drinks)?

Samantha, you work in a fast food business, well I know which one you
work in, and well I went to your restaurant with my family, we ordered
drinks and did not get our drinks, we waited twenty minutes and we
did not get anything. It was really busy, but my family and I feel
that we had bad service. So we all just walked out and you did not
even care and that really burts my feelings Samantha. This happened
a month and a half ago, and we did not call to complain because we
figured out that your restaurant was not worth it.

Here is a list of what we ordered

Younger Brother : Root Beer
Me : Cream Soda
Older Brother : Iced Tea
Mother : Diet coke
Father : Regular Coke

I would realy like to receive five free meals for my family. I would
also like Samantha fired because she was my server.

. . . (never mentioned a date or time of day) You went to AN
Applebee's (never mentioned where) asked for two Mountain Dews (never
said who you asked this of.) Didn't get drinks or any other service
for more than 20 minutes (are you SURE it was an Applebee's you were
in?) and then stormed out without saying anything to anyone there
because you felt it was a waste of time and have not returned.

So tell me again why you should, with this very vague and dubious
story, receive TWO free meals?

Man, I'm getting tired of newbies to the site who refer to old events
and then demand freebies.

Samantha, yes you should have received better service. Do you deserve
a free meal? OF COURSE YOU DON'T. Do you want to eat at a place that
gave you such lousy service? Probably not. Just as Applebee's
probably doesn't want you eating there, given that you don't know how
to open your mouth and ask to speak to a manager, or to stop a
waitress to tell her you've been waiting X minutes for your drinks and
could she please have someone check on them?

Stay home.

I twice have gone to an Applebees and walked out without receiving
service (no one ever even came to the table). After a patient but
long wait, I informed the hostess on the way out that someone maybe
ought to check to see who's manning what stations. I didn't ask for a
manager (my choice). I wasn't in the mood to deal with a manager and
say blah blah blah, I just wanted an easy going evening out. So, I
went and ate somewhere else and had a good time. End of story. I
could have called the next day and told the manager what happened. I
choose not to. I'm trying to imagine myself complaining a month later
and asking for a free meal. I think I would have A LOT of nerve
asking for a free meal a month later, don't you agree, especially
since you work in the "food business".

Basically, I was agreeable with your letter until I got to the last
line. And you don't say WHICH Applebees you alledge this incident took
place at. And the line about how you never bothered to call because
you figured it wouldn't be worth you time is ridiculous in light of
the fact that it was suddenly worth your time to write a letter and
ask for free meals a month later.

You are right about that being too long to wait for your soda. That's
where your being right ends. When you walked out you forfeited
everything. You have no way to prove you were there. They have no
way to prove you were there. Honestly, for working in food service,
you should be more savvy than this. Also, it has been asked before,
but i have to ask again--is this 20 "customer minutes" or 20 actual
planet Earth minutes? The sensible thing to do is go to the cashier
or manager and say, "could you see what's going on?" Oh, but wait--
if you had done that you couldn't have begged freebies.

So...it's not worth your time to call the restaurant to complain, or
speak to the manager, but it's worth your time to sit down and write
this letter?

You didn't get any food or drink--you walked out without receiving
anything--so therefore Applebee's owes you nothing.

"I never called to complain because I figured that it wouldn't be
worth my time."

So, why the h-e-double-hockey-sticks are you writing? How can this
possibly be worth your time?

"I would like to receive a free meal for both of us."

Oh, because this is a scam.

If this really happened to you, you'd have walked to the host desk and
asked to speak to the manager. But you didn't. So, even if this
really happened, you deserve nothing.

And you mentioned this to who while you were in the restaurant? The
manager? Your server? The host or hostess? So you ended up walking
out and no one said anything. Did anyone know why you were walking
out? For all they knew you were going out for a smoke or to get
something from your car.

Since you both work in food service, you must know how easy it is for
a server to get distracted. It could be anything from a complicated
order at a large table or handling a customer complaint about food.

Since you didn't bother to express your disatisfaction at the time,
you don't deserve a freebee!

Ah - you had me, except for two not-so-minor details.

1) You waited a MONTH before complaining - that makes your complaint
very, in my eyes, invalid. If it were that big a deal, you'd have
done something AT THE TIME.

2) Your freebie grab. Tsk tsk. You made no effort to resolve this
matter at the time, so I don't see how you think this complaint will
get you anywhere at this late date. For all they know, you're making
it up.

You claim to work in the food business, yet you took no steps to
ensure this matter was taken care of. Sorry; I'm not buying it.

I think your letter is well written. I agree totally. Twenty minutes
is too long to wait. I'm glad you didn't make a scene in the store, I
guess being in the food business yourselves, you know that angle
seldom works. And not mentioning it to anyone is really a keen
angle... I never thought of doing that myself but it makes total
sense. So I do think you deserve two free meals just for the polite
way you both handled the situation and let a lot of time pass so you
didn't get overly emotional. Never good in a professional
correspondence.
Do write back and let us know how the service is with the two meals.
We like to base our decisions on other's experiences.

Thanks so much for sharing this and Please keep us posted!!!

You know I remember reading a another letter where someone had ordered
something, and they waited for a long time, I don't remember what
restaurant it was but it was over a month ago, was it you? Did this
really happen or are you just trying to get free meals. The letter
had the exact same story, someone ordered something, they waited and
did not get anything, then they walked out and no one cared, they too
wanted free meals, this was either on PFB or my3cents which I was
kicked out of (because they use age discrimation for members to join)
anyways I remember seeing the same letter. The words may have been
different but the situation was the same.
