The fact is, it isn't the bank's money, it's the OP's. There most definitely should be a procedure in place to handle a situation like this. Tellers and other bank employees have three-ring binders full of procedures and how to do things. This process should be included.
It isn't rocket science. The OP shouldn't have to work this hard to get HER money back, even though she is the one who misplaced the check.

I had an outstanding check for 18mos once. My aunt forgot I gave it to her for her birthday and she put it away with the cards and forgot about it until she was cleaning the drawer and found it. She called me and asked if she could cash it, I still had the funds in the account so I told her to go ahead...they cashed it without a problem.
If this is monies owed to you by BOA then its still showing on their account as being outstanding. So while I agree you should have kept the check in a more important place so you could remember to cash it, they should issue another check if you give them the past dated check.

That is why they give you almost 6 months to cash the check.
It is not their fault you didn't cash it in time, nor their fault you forgot where you put it.
Yet you are holding *them* responsible for it.

good luck, but they are not obligated to issue you another check. You had 4 months.

I have a check I wrote on my BOA account May 9 that hasn't been cashed yet. I asked how long until it is considered no good and I was told "never". I clarified - "So if someone wants to cash it a year from now you will honor that" and I was told yes.
No I'm wondering which is true. Surely it can't be forever, can it?

You need to contact the person or company who issued you the check and ask them to reissue you the check. It may take a few business days, as they will have to verify that your check was never cashed.

Can't you just take the check to a local BoA branch and speak with someone there? You know Ken Lewis isn't going to help you.
