BellSouth Aggravations

I ordered service from BellSouth in April. I requested DSL and they refused to let me purchase that without also getting a land line so I ordered that as well. They said they would send someone out to activate the service on Friday, which worked out well, I remember, because I had that Friday off and would easily be home at the time they expected to come. In the meantime I not surprising found a much better deal, so I called and canceled the BellSouth service. Friday came and no one from BellSouth ever showed up. Because I called and canceled the service, and no one ever showed up, nor did I ever hear from anyone from BellSouth.
I assumed that the order had been canceled and would have no further dealings with BellSouth.
Then in September I received an overdue notice that I was six months behind in payments and that the entire bill ($360 dollars, roughly) was due immediately (on Sept. 20) or my account would go to collections. Of course I called BellSouth immediately and talked to several VERY nice and VERY helpful people. I explained the situation and they checked my account and saw that I had never used the DSL line and never had used the phone line. My account was completely unused so they assured me they took the charges off the account. The CS rep went through each charge on the bill, explained it to me and also assured me it was removed.
I assumed that the bill had been taken care of and would have no further dealings with BellSouth.
Now, in December I just received a letter from a Collections Attorney and phone calls from same to my cell phone and work. Turns out, there was still $165 left on the account that I was completely unaware of and instead of contacting me to resolve the issue, my account was simply sent to collections.
I called BellSouth regarding this and was on the phone for nearly an hour and talked to 5 different departments, all of whom said that they could not help me that they could only accept payments and then they'd pass me on to the next until finally informing me that I was only allowed to talk to the Collections Attorney regarding this matter.
I then got a call from the Collections Attorney today who informed me, not surprisingly, he can only accept payment and could not help me resolve any billing issues and that I'd have to contact BellSouth for that.
Be Fair. BellSouth needs to immediately withdraw the submission of my account to collections. Secondly, I realize there is a $42.50 Connection Charge that is included in the amount I owe. While I feel as though this charge is ridiculous, I understand that I made a commitment to pay it and I will uphold that commitment. However, I do not feel as though I should have to pay for service that I never used and did not want. I would like BellSouth to accept my $42.50 as a total payment on the account and drop all further charges.
