In May 2006 I discontinued my phone service with BellSouth & the bill was paid in full (auto deducted from my acct.) Shortly after I received a bill dated for June - they billed me for another month in which I did not have service & they deducted the bill $41.48 from my bank account (I suppose the lesson is never sign up for auto pay)

I called BellSouth explained the mistake - they stated they could not reverse the charges and that I had to call my bank and have them reverse the charges for me. Which I did. I got my money back. Problem solved? No.

A month later (JULY) I receive another bill from Bell South - this time charging me not only the 41.48 for a month of service I did not have but they also charged me 30.00 return check fee!!!!! I called BellSouth again & asked then to fix this. They said they would.

November - I am now getting phone calls at my place of work from the collection agency. The women I spoke with tells me there is no note of an error that I should call Bellsouth again & dispute the bill if I believe I don't owe it.

So I do just that. Three phone calls later (2 hrs of my time while at work) - A few disconnected calls, transferred to multiple people, put on hold for a combined time of probably 27 minutes. I am told they would note my account and file the request for the charges to be removed. Oh & I, yes I must call them back in 48 hours to confirm it went through. Once it has I may then get a copy of the new bill or notice stating that there is a zero balance and I must provide the collection agency with this.

Experience tells me -not to be hopeful.

In the interim - my credit continues to be effected and I am being harassed by collections all due to BellSouth's inability to follow simple rules and do simple math.

RULE 1) You can't charge customers for services they did not receive - like a month of phone service

RULE 2)You can't charge a customer a returned check fee - If you tell your customer to have their bank reverse the charges because you can't refund them their money that you took in error.

I request BellSouth remove the charges & remove me from collections immediately!

Furthermore, I request that any incorrect comments or marks made to the credit agencies be corrected.

Thank you kindly,
C P

This is common. Bellsouth bills a month in advance, as does all
cellular companies. I learned this the hard way. If you cancel
midmonth, you get billed that following month. I have been a
customers of theirs for almost 15 years and I learned this at the
beginning. I believe that the charging a month in advance is in there
customer agreement that you agreed to when you started the service. I
will have to do some research for this but I do believe they explain
this before service is started.

If you write a check to someone and it gets returned to them
insufficient funds, yes they can charge a returned check fee. It is
the bank that can't charge you the insufficient check charge, but they
can charge you a stop check fee.

There is no error on Bellsouth's part here. You didn't pay and they
sent you to collections and notated your credit report as such.
