Lied To and Misled at Best Buy

Dear Sir or Madam,

On July 21st 2012 I went to your store in Bangor Maine to purchase a JVC car stereo head unit and a dash kit so that it would fit my 2004 Grand Prix. I told the sales associate (I don't recall her name, it started with a K) that I had never installed one before and asked if i would need any special tools or wiring she told me I would not. She made it clear that I simply unplug the old unit and plug in the new, and slip it into the slot and I was good to go. I even gave her the make model and year, which she looked up in the computer.

I got everything home and took apart the dash so I could remove my old radio,I unplugged the old radio and found that the new radio did not have the same plug in the back. I went back to Best Buy to ask why I was told I would not need special wiring. The associate I spoke to said "I don't know, but we can sell it to you for $129.99, oh and you'll need an antenna adapter too, youre looking at about $150 total"

I was upset at this point, my old radio had already been removed and the new dash kit installed, all I was expecting to do was plug in and snap into place. I went home and uninstalled the dash kit, replaced my old radio, boxed it back up and returned it. I told the person at the return counter that I was returning this and did not appreciate being lied to.

I would like Best Buy to review their training procedures. I do not appreciate beling lied to, especially when a little bundle of wires is going to cost TWICE what the radio did.

Your associates should not be lying to customers just to make a quick sale, just to have that customer return and expect him to buy more stuff.

After this, I am seriously considering making all my electronics purchases through Amazon, where I have found knowledgable people who care about making their customers happy.

Best Buy has some decent prices and decent merchandise.

BUT

You can NEVER rely on the technical information their floor associates
give you. It would be great if you could. But, with only a few
exceptions, many of these kids are hired and thrown on to the floor
with the only training being how to look up information on their own
web site.

I know this for a fact -- my son worked there for a while and had to
educate HIMSELF on the products he was selling.

The O.P. has a valid complaint but has learned a lesson for all of us.
Go to Best Buy only if you know exactly what you need and have
researched your tech spec.'s in advance

It's a hard lesson to learn but you should never take technical advise
from a salesman. Either look it up yourself or talk to someone who
actually works with or installs the devices.

I can't exactly blame the employee on this one.

Yes the employee thought it would be easy for you, but they're not
responsible for what you do to your own car no matter what you say
they advise.

Plus a quick look at the website does state that some tools are
required:
http://www.geeksquad.com/services/car-gps/car-stereo-installation.aspx

(look for the "* Hardware not included." phrase).

The main problem though is that... they can't guarantee your own work.
It might be covered under one of the extended warranty plans but i
don't remember.

but mainly... before you decide to do your own electronics work, it's
best to actually research what you're doing.

Most of my worse screwups when I was in the Navy was from opening
electronics up BEFORE actually reading the tech manuals. Nothing good
comes of easter-egging electronics. Always be prepared before you
start a job.

well her 20 minutes of training sure failed her.

Look online and you can adaptor kits for alot cheaper. I had to buy
one for my new alpine and it cost me $40.00 on ebay.

Why do you think the nickname of the company is "Best Lie"?

Those BB employees don't know crap. I was just talking with friends
today about BB and every one of them has a bad taste in their mouth as
a result of having shopped there. I would never rely on their
employees to know anything about what I'm buying.

I'm glad you got so fed up that you returned it.

Another reason why I never rely on salespeople to give me the
information I need. I do all my research online before I ever step
into a store for a major purchase.

I wish you luck with the install. Hopefully they will contact you and
offer either free installation or a huge discount on the parts you
need.
