You FIRED two employees for trying to help recover stolen assets???
That's dumb. You are sending the WRONG message to criminals. You are saying: "Come on in, steal whatever you want, and we'll just let you out. Sure, we'll file a police report, but never get the property back."
I would have thought that you had a better management model than this.
Reward the employees for at least trying to do the right thing by your company. Give them their jobs back WITH backpay.

I saw this on the news. The first thought in my head was that now all thiefs know that they can steal anything in BB because no one is allowed to stop them.

Had the shoplifter killed one of the employees with his knife, the estate would be suing the company BIG TIME for not properly protecting him. This is to cover their own butt and also promote safety.
There was a rule, the employees broke it, they got fired. It is totally legitimate.

if they would have lost their jobs if the thief had actually been caught?

The whole thing is wrong all the way around. I hope these two sue for wrongful termination.

I agree with Bill and Rowdy. This is for the protection of employees and customers: And employee's life is worth more than any merchandise or money.

No, it is dumb to chase shoplifters. They broke the rules, they pay the price.

Scott H.,
I see your point and have been involved in something much like this.
One must consider the liability the company assumed when the two employees took chase. The potential for bodily harm to them, the perp and bystanders was very high and that is exactly why they are told in their training not to challenge a perp.
The whole concept of rolling over and giving a perp whjat they demand makes me sick but as an employee an employee is duty bound to adhere to established policy.
However, if the same thing happens and these two folks are off the clock I pitty the perp for getting whatever they deal him.
