Poor Management

I recently moved from Long Beach, Ms, to Gulfport, Ms. I was always very happy at your Long Beach store.

My husband and I rent VERY frequently. On our last visit to your Gulfport location, we were not allowed to rent videos because we had some that were still out. This had NEVER happened to us before. Our movies were only about a week past due.

We spoke with the manager on duty. She told us that this was Blockbuster's policy. We told her that the Long Beach store had always allowed us to rent; we always brought our movies back and paid the late fees.

We asked if it would be in issue if she lost a customer over this. Her exact reply was, "nope."

We called your customer service number about two weeks ago and explained our situation. We were told that this complaint would go to a district manager and that we would hear from him/her soon. We have yet to hear anything.

We have since started renting at our local privately owned video store.

Contact me. I will then supply membership information. I would also like to have my membership fee refunded.

Perhaps the district manager didn't call you because the store was,
gasp, not in the wrong. It is Blockbuster policy that you can't rent
if you have items overdue. How do they know you aren't some deadbeats
that aren't going to return the movies. And no, belive it or not,
they aren't going to care if you don't rent from them because the
movies that you would rent someone else will. And like all
Blockbuster customers, you will be back some day, when the 5 copies of
the new release that your local store has isn't enough and you need to
get one of the 100 that Blockbuster has.

Since the removal of late fees in 2005 something very strange has
happened at Blockbuster. They took what were once their most
profitable customers (deadbeats who kept movies well past their due
dates) and turned them into unprofitable customers. These people who
kept movies a week or more overdue made the business a good chunk of
their revenue. Now with no late fees these people get away with
paying nothing extra. It has driven the company into severe debt, and
now its nearly impossible to rent a brand new movie within its first
month of release due to people holding onto them for extended periods
of time.

I would love to be a fly on the wall in the board meeting where this
decision was made. What the hell were these corporate fat cats
thinking?

How hard is it to bring the movies back the same day you are trying to
rent new ones?

..."This had NEVER happened to us before. Our movies were only about a
week past due."
Oh now stop it. You are lying and I am glad to not be standing near
you for fear of lightening striking you down.

The reason I know you are not telling the truth is because BB relies
on their late fees and not so late fees that they charge (because they
fail to check movies in on time even though they are in the drop off
bins).

Glad to see you giving your local rental store the business...they
need it much more than BB and are much more friendlier to their
customers because they appreciate the fact that you use their store
and not BB or other national stores.

"But miss, my movies are only a week late". Well guess what, the
policy says, if you don't return them on time, meaning, if you return
them a week late, you will pay a fee. Nobody likes to pay late fees,
but hey, return your movies on time and you won't. If you can't get
your movies in on time, maybe you should try a rental service that
offers no late fees. Like maybe, Blockbuster's competitor?

How many movies can one watch in one week? Are they *that* hard to
part with?

Keywords: PAST DUE. Bring back your other movies that are PAST DUE and
shut up!

by mariam67 Posted Wed December 5, 2007 @ 8:46 PM

Why don't you just bring the movies back?

Reply

by MA Loper Posted Wed December 5, 2007 @ 2:06 PM

WHAT?

So basically, you think you can have movies out, keep them past their
return date, and they should let you take out MORE?

And what membership fee? Renting videos at the local Blockbuster is
FREE!

Unbelievable!

Im not sure what is worse.

1. Boycotting Blockbuster because they are "anti-christian."

OR

2. Boycotting Blockbuster because you have extremely late items and
they refuse to rent to you until the late items are returned.

Lets have a vote. I say number two. The person in number one is
probably just an idiot. But it seems there's a bit more than that in
number two.

yup....i would have done the same thing as that manager...I'm a former
BlockBuster crew trainer or whatever they call them now, and we had
this all the time. I thought they still had that no late fee
policy...if it is STILL in effect those movies would have bben charged
to your credit card as a purchase. ou could have still rented movies.
If they did indeed take away said No late fee policy, then as I stated
first, the manager was right.

They put that policy in place, because of rude, self-centered,
thoughtless people like you. When you keep those movies for a week
past the due date, OTHER people, cannot rent them.

"Only about a week past due"? I'd say you are hardly in a position to
demand a phone call much less the refund of your membership fee.

by Quasi_Mondo Posted Tue December 4, 2007 @ 6:01 PM

So, and correct me if I'm wrong, you REGULARLY keep movies more than a
week past due?

Um. Okay.

of the Gulfport, MS Blockbuster for explaining the store's policy and
not kowtowing to your ridiculous request.

And her curt reply to your inappropriate question of "nope" was
perfect. She was probably praying that you would take your butt to
another store.

I would never dream of keeping a video a week past its due date. For
you it seems like standard operating procedure. I'm glad the store
manager set you straight. Straight out the door!

Not renting more movies to you when you owe them money seems to me to
be a reasonable policy.

Not regarding themselves as bound by what a customer claims are the
practices of a different Blockbuster somewhere else is also perfectly
reasonable.

The fact that the Gulfport store has policies and follows them does
not mean you are owed a full refund.

I do agree with you that if they told you someone would call you soon,
someone should have done that.

Maybe they thought that your "they're only about a week past due"
attitude meant that while the district manager should have called
other people within a week or so, it wouldn't be a big deal to you if
your call didn't happen for a week or so plus about a week. I don't
think that is any more reasonable than your position about wanting to
rent more before you'd brought back (and paid for) what you had
already rented. Still, I have a hard time getting too wound up about
the injustices done you in this situation.

I do think it might be worth rewriting this complaint with your
membership information included. You will have a chance to edit those
details from the version that shows up here for public content. It's
probably a good idea to make it as easy as possible for these people
to do what you want them to.

You poor thing.

Your argument is so ridiculous, I dont know where to start. You have
movies out that are more than a week past due, why should they let you
take more of their property? If you had rented a car and kept it a
week longer than you said, would Avis give you another one? Why not
just watch the movies you have that are a week late? Or if they have
been watched, why not return them? I worked in video stores for 7
years through high school and college. If I had a dime for every
person like yourself who complained like this, I would be a
millionaire now.

What are you going to when you keep your videos a week past due at the
mom & pop video store? They have late fees, ya know the thing that
blockbuster doesn't charge anymore. Are you going to cry again?
Blockbuster is not going to miss you. In fact they will be glad you
are no longer costing them money because you decided to keep movies
more than seven days late and you wont have to pay a dime. It's
idiots like yourself and moron corporate dimwits that have pushed this
company nearly into bankruptcy. People cried over having to pay late
fees because they were too lazy to return their movies, and the
corporate suits did away late charges....brilliant idea.
