Pinnacle Housing Unfair Practices

Posted Mon June 23, 2008 1:33 am, by Ashley F.

To whom it may concern:

My family is a military family currently stationed at Laughlin AFB, Tx. Your company has recently purchased our housing as your own rental property. I, along with many of the other families on base, do not agree with the way you manage the homes on this base.
First of all, you don't have a set rent amount for each housing unit. ( 600 a month for a 2 bedroom, 700 for a 3 bedroom, so on) You just automatically take our entire BAH ( housing allowance ) regardless of which house we get.
Also, you do not allow us to choose the home we get to rent. You only allow us to choose from two empty homes and say that if we have on child we only get 2 bedrooms, and 2 kids gets 3, etc. However, there are many families on this base who have 1 child and a 3 bedroom home, but we were told that we were not allowed to.
Texas renter rights clearly state that you cannot discriminate against a family for number of memebers and that we shall be able to rent any available unit.
What really bothers me about this is the fact that you just take the BAH regardless of the house. So we are paying more for our little 2 bedroom house than an lower ranking person pays for their 3 bedroom/2 bath home. This just is not a fair practice.
Also, when my husband put on Senior Airman in March, his BAH went up, and instead of us getting to see that raise, you just automatically take it. All the families here on this base suffer finacially enough do to the location of the base being so close to the border, the spouses have a very, very hard time finding employment due to the fact that you must be fluent in spanish to obtain any respectable postion. And if you do get a job it is so low paying due to the people that come across the border, work for cheap, and go home to Mexico.
I wish that you would establish a rental amount per unit and also allow us to choose how many bedrooms we find fit for our family.

I have to agree with you that this seems an unfair practice - as you
said, different ranks are awarded different levels of BAH and to take
that entire amount and have no say so in the home you live in is not
right.

But I have to ask if this is something your husband has taken up with
the XO or whoever handles the housing there on base. This is a
private organization that is contracted to the AF to supply housing
for the servicemen and women, but to my understanding, that doesnt
mean they can do any old thing they want without recourse.

My younger sister is an officer in the Navy. She just got relocated
to North Carolina from TN and had chosen a very nice condo and began
having furniture and appliances delivered in advance of her move in
date. To her shock, she got a call from the realtor saying the house
was still being shown even after she had signed and faxed her lease to
the agent and that now the house was sold to another party and she had
no place to live!

She had to leave our family vacation early to square things away, but
one call to her superiors got everything resolved for her.

As I said, if you haven't, turn to the Air Force for help on this one.
If there is one thing an active duty military family shouldn't have
to worry about, its their housing situation.
