Top Twenty Letters
Posted Sun November 12, 2006 12:00 pm, by
Controversy has always surrounded the Top Twenty Letter list which appears on the secondary pages of PFB.
If I understand correctly, the concerns are as follows:
1. Letters stay on the list too long.
2. People are purposefully writing "inane" letters in order to get them onto the Top Twenty list and keep them there.
The purpose of the Top Twenty Letter list is to highlight those letters which get the most views and have the most buzz. This is measured by a combination of page views and comments. Placement is done automatically. It isn't perfect however it offers folks the opportunity to see what's being talked about on the site very quickly. This is particularly useful for those who are new to the site...it allows them to "get in the game" quickly without having to sift through a whole bunch of chaff first.
There is only one way for a letter to make it to the Top Twenty and that is through YOU. That's it. It has nothing to do with the nature of the letter and everything to do with the importance that YOU assign to it.
The perfect example of this concept in action is today's mini controversy regarding the Red Robin letter which was posted earlier today. Dont go looking for it...it's been removed. In the four hours it was on the site, it generated a ton of page views, a bunch of comments and a strident post in the Suggestion Box.
Essentially, someone copied a current (and controversial)Top Twenty letter written to Chilis and pasted it into a letter to be sent to Red Robin. It then shot to the top of the Top Twenty.
In his/her comment in the Suggestion Box, Prisoner 6 refers to this as "idiocy at its finest". Im not sure which part of the whole thing Prisoner 6 thinks is idiotic but I will say this...IF all 15 people who commented on that clearly bogus letter had, instead, sent me a quick email letting me know such a letter was on the site, it wouldn't have made it to the Top Twenty.
People are going to sneak crap like the Red Robin letter onto the site...we can't stop that. All we can do is react when they do. It's completely unrealistic to expect us to spot such a letter five seconds after it's been posted. Especially on the weekend. If, in the time between the letter hits the site and we remove it, the users pump it up into the Top Twenty, that is NOT an indictment of the Top Twenty concept.
We have CONSTANTLY reminded users to send us the links to letters or comments which they find suspect. I'll do it here again...if you find something that you think is inappropriate, send the link to beth@planetfeedback.com or greg@planetfeedback.com. We'll review the letter or comment and make a decision and let you know what that decision is.
The process for dealing with letters like the Red Robin letter is there...it's up to you to use it.

If people would stop commenting on the "Top 20" letters only to make the same comments that have already been made several times.
Yeah...that would work for me.
I see at least 4 letters right now that are staying in the Top 20 only because people keep adding the exact same comments that are already there.
Let the freakin' letters die already, people.
If you're only going to add what's already there, then don't bother.
It's boring.
Is anybody really going to add anything new and insightful to the breastfeeding on the Delta Airlines issue?
I don't think so.
It's a no winning side debate because either side is going to feel the other person is wrong.
How many more times can one obnoxious person acting like a little boy who has just come across his first nudie magazine amuse himself by making "boobie" jokes, as if a woman's breast is a reason for hilarity and giggles?
It's already been established that the lady who complained about the kissing at Chili's is either a moron or a troll, so how many more ways can that be said?
We already know her bragging abour her education means nothing.
Move on.
Let another letter take its place.
The experts here have already decided that lady who wanted the spoon at Wendy's was either right to expect good service, or deserves a public flogging for expecting it and daring to complain that she didn't get it.
OK. There's really nothing more to add to that discussion either.
She didn't get her spoon. She complained. Get over it.
We all know that a member either is in favour of saying "Merry Christmas" or not. We know that some feel that paganism rules and Christianity sucks, and while those who do not believe in Christ should have free rein to celebrate in any manner that they wish, all those who wish to actually put the "Christ" back in "Christmas" should lighten up and get with the secular age, while those on the other side wish all those pagans would quit enforcing a double standard on them. So what's the point in continuing that debate?
Ooooh...and we all know that nobody around here is a MONSTER. Nobody makes nasty comments around here, and nobody treats anyone else with disrespect. The commenters are only offering their opinions and it's a free country and people are just too sensitive and blah blah blah.
Haven't enough strips been torn off anyone who dared to step forward and point out that, yes, people here can be downright rude at times, or even some people are rude all the time.
What's the point in keeping that discussion alive?
I really have to wonder about the sheep mentality when it comes to commenting.
I am finding this place either more amusing by the day, or really annoying, depending on my mood at the moment.
People are so funny.

Well, I guess I'll go first since I seem to be the one resonsible for recently bringing the Top 20 issue to everyone's attention.
I might have said that the Top 20 list is the root of all evil, but I never meant the list itself. It's the commenters who cause the list to become something other than what it was intended to be. It's no secret that in the past I have tried to get people to understand the way the list works and how to avoid it from becoming stagnant. As a commenter, the content of the Top 20 list is YOUR choice. If the letter is obviously a fraud, it should be reported as such. If the letter is simply the rantings of a lunatic but still legitimate, then it must be ignored in order for it to go away. It's not a difficult concept to understand.
There's no reason for the letters not to get new views each day, but for anyone to continue clicking on them over and over, and repeating comments that have already been posted, is simply foolish and serves no purpose whatsoever, except to keep the letter on the list long after it becomes redundant and boring.
