Saturday,12/13/08, 6:30pm visit
I went to Burger King (#8817), which is a corporate store, to order four (4) value meals for my teenage boys.
I asked for the meals to be sized to large sodas and fries for an additional .89 cents a piece.
The cashier informed me that she wasn't allowed to sell "large" orders per her manager. I asked why and she informed me that they were out of large french fry containers! Please note that this is a corporate store and it's a Saturday evening, and this is not the first time I've encountered a supply problem at this location
I asked to speak to the manager. I kindly suggested that she substitute a medium fry and a small fry for the unavailable large fry. She said no. An explanation wasn't given, i.e., corporate policy, portion control, etc.. She acted as if she didn't care.
I ended up taking my boys to a competitors store for their meals.
Taking into consideration my frustration, lack of explanation and indifference on the company rep's part, not to mention four hungry teenagers, I'll leave it up to a customer service manager or supervisor to ameliorate this unfortunate visit .

This is an excellent letter and at least you didn't make outlandish demands in return for their ineptitude. Good job!

Huh, weird... If I were a manager, I wouldn't be turning away a reasonably-sized order because we were out of large containers.
I'd say your course of action was spot-on here; if you can't get what you need, you can always get it somewhere else!

When I worked at Wendy's, if we ran out of supplies or food, we would borrow it from another store. These were all owned by the same franchisee (he owned 50), however there could possibly be another corporate store in the area.

Or didn't as of last year. They're cutting off their nose to spite their collective face, but that's how it is.

Most everyone said what I would've said. So, ditto...they should've been able to accomodate your request.
But I also wanted to say I like the alliteration in the title. "Location lacking large"....it just rolls right off the tongue! :)

I worked for Mcdonalds way back in 96-98 and briefly supervised shifts in 2003...the running out of large container did happen once in a while, and we always ended up using like a small and medium or 2 or 3 smalls, or a super size not all the way filled.

In this econcomy, restaurants and other businesses run into these supply problems because there are caps placed on spending for supplies due to tighter budgets. So, regardless as to what day of the week it is, I can see them being out of some containers and that may be out of their control.
That being said, there certainly should have been some way to finagle a large fry for you. I work for a restaurant, and unless we are out of the food item itself, we find a way to present it to the guest. To deny you a large fry is cutting of their nose to spite their face.
I hope you got a good meal at McDonald's or Wendy's or wherever you ended up. To be honest with you, I haven't been too crazy about BK fries since they changed their recipe 12 years ago or so.

Unfortunately, there are a certain number of employees, both management and otherwise, who are not service oriented but, instead, just robots who don't know what to do if the target is moved six inches either side of the path.
If they dont have large fry boxes available, then there are a number of ways to take care of your very reasonable request and none of them involve refusing to take care of you. I absolutely guarantee it cost them more to lose just YOUR business than it would to give a medium and small fry to every person who wanted it that way that day.

I think a large fry container is smaller than a medium + a small, so I can see how they wouldn't want to do this all night (if no large containers were available). However, since you had a conversation about it, I think the manager should have made an exception to the policy and ordered more large containers next time.

If that is the best the manager can come up with, I dare say she shouldn't be managing a restaurant. Your suggestion to give you a medium and a small fry in place of the large order of fries sounds "close enough" to me. That they would turn away a ~$20 order over this issue is just stupid.
