Defective Calphalon Pans

Posted Thu June 4, 2009 12:00 pm, by Brenda B. written to Calphalon

Write a Letter to this Company

I received a gift at my bridal shower in April from my Bed Bath and Beyond registry of the Calphalon Classic 12" x 17" Jelly Roll Pan Combo. I recently used the pans, for the very first time, to make cookies. I was very disappointed when, after cleaning the pans, I noticed that a portion of the non-stick coating had come off.

I used these pans under very normal circumstances. I baked the cookies at 350 degrees, used a silicone spatula to remove the cookies from the pans, and soaked them in warm water and dish detergent before sponging them clean. The cookies did not burn. I have many other Calphalon products, and have never had an issue with any of them. Frankly I would expect better performace from a cheap item purchased at a discount store.

I would like to be refunded the purchase price of $29.99 plus 8% tax so that I can buy a replacement product. Bed Bath and Beyond will not accept this as a return, and said I had to contact the manufacturer and make a warranty claim. I am more than willing to send the pans to you, if Calphalon will pay the postage. The packaging and shipping of these items would negate any reimbursement I get for the inferior product.

you're having return issues too! BB&B is one of the most LENIENT in
their returns of just about any vendor I've seen. If you have a
receipt or registry, I thought they always gave you a store credit.

Esp. since it is a defective item, I am stunned they refused it.

I bought my dad a Calphalon non-stick frying pan for his birthday one
year and when we unboxed it, it was actually dented! It was clearly
not something we could have done as it was the wall of the pan that
was several layers of metal thick. Macy's/Kauffman's took it right
back and exchanged it with no problem.

I hope one of them steps up and takes care of this for you, although I
think I would write a letter to BB&B as well. Maybe getting the
attention of someone higher up the ladder will get a resolution at the
store level rather than forcing you to do a manufacturer's warranty
claim.

Good luck!

I am extremely surprised that you are having trouble returning this to
BBB - have you called the store manager, another store or the corp
office? They can RTV these items - whether they send it back or they
have a destroy and deduct agreement I don't know, but they usually
stand behind the items they sell pretty well. Try to escalate there
as well. Good luck.

Too bad these pans weren't purchased at Kohl's. You could have
returned them to the store. Even without a receipt, they probably
would have offered you something. I realize that doesn't help you
now, but it's one of the reasons I love shopping at Kohl's.

My Mom works for a Calphalon outlet store and I LOVE Calphalon...but I
had the exact same problem with the baking pans as you did with yours.
I personally love to use my pizza stone to bake cookies on. Just
have to remember to take the cookies out a little bit earlier than
usual.

I have not been happy with nonstick cookie sheets/jelly roll pans.
But it's getting to where the old kind (aluminum?) aren't as easy to
find! The nonstick kind are darker, causing cookies to burn (or just
get overly brown) on the bottoms when the rest of the cookie is fine.

I don't blame you for not wanting a replacement and just wanting your
money back.

Brenda B.,

Sounds like a reasonable request.
Stop back when you hear back.
