Refuses to acknowledge letters to close my account and continues to bill for membership fees with LATE CHARGES on the fee.

Close my account and remove the late fees.
As a senior citizen I will be contacting the proper authorities and the media to get this resolved.

Most credit unions don't have a montly membership fee. I myself have
been a member with this credit union since I was 3 and have only been
charged with a membership fee one time. I think that you have fee's
for being overdrawn and they will not close the account since you are
negative.
I don't think that this is a case of some one targeting you since you
are a senior citizen.

When you call, do they give a REASON for not closing the account? For
example, they might refuse to close it if there are unpaid charges.

While there is a lot senior-abuse out there, this doesn't sound like
you've been targeted for your age. My guess is that, if there isn't a
good reason, that the problem lies in an administrative error.

What I suggest you do is write a letter, via US Mail that states the
date of your first request to cancel. State that, at that point, you
believe that you had a zero balance (if this is true, of course). If
you have copies of any previous letters or e-mails, include them as
attachments. Request that they either provide, in writing, an
explanation for why the account cannot be closed (and any fees
canceled) OR to close the account and send you a statement of $0 due.
Given them 15 days, from receipt, to do this. Be polite, but clear.

Send the letter via certified mail/return receipt. Check the back of
your bill to see if there is a special address for this, since the
typical address may be a "lockbox" that can only accept payments.

If, after 15 days from their receipt (you'll know, since you sent it
return receipt) you do not hear from them, forward a copy of your
letter to your state AG. While they don't take on individual cases,
they will be able to tell you which agency can assist you.

If all else fails, you COULD take them to court. Hopefully, it won't
come to this. A company like this may make mistakes (and refuse to
acknowledge them), but they will respond to AG requests.

Good luck.

William, I would like to suggest that you contact your state attorney
general's office. Most, if not all, have people who specialize in
helping senior citizens who are being ripped off. Check the blue
pages of your phone book, or your local library can help you get the
number. Good luck!
