Wanting to open up an on-line savings account.

I applied for a Citibank savings deposit account and was declined. This is for an on-line savings account with direct deposit and transfer of funds from my paycheck and/or checking account from my primary bank. I was declined and the letter I received, dated 5-23-07 stated "Thank you for your interest in opening up a Citibank deposit account. We appreciate your interest, however, we regret that an account may not be opened for you at this time. The decision on your application was based whole or in part on information obtained in a report from the consumer agency listed below: Trans Union.
No reason was given. Just the notation of a Trans Union report. That is all.
I have heard that Citibank is a fair and honest company to do business with. I am trying my best to establish a savings account and have become pretty frustrated that I could be denied a savings account. I have never heard of a bank turning down Americans for a savings account in all my like. I though that banks would welcome savings accounts. Perhaps I was wrong.
This is for an on-line savings account. I called customer service twice and they refused to assist me and were quite rude. They said both times that they had no reasons listed to deny me a savings account and that I would receive a letter why I am being denied a savings account.
I have been employed as a social worker with the same agency for the past 14 years and I gross in salary over $42,500.00.
I am asking to open up a savings account as your rates are good. This is not for a credit account. I am asking for a reconsideration please.
Thank you,
I would like to open up a savings account.

To me it sounds like you need to request your credit report. As fas as I know Citi pulls your credit, for any kind of business you want with them. Good Luck.

It sounds like you need to order a copy of your credit report and see what's going on.
Emigrant bank is a bank I use and they have a very good rate on savings accounts I think they're up to 4.98% now.
Is there a reason why you've chosen Citibank? Can't you use another bank?

as a banker, i prefer local banks to national chain banks. The rates are actually pretty compairable, they offer the same services, and usually smaller local banks have involvement in the local community.

It sounds like what you need to do is to first get a regular saving account and then after a number of months, convert it to an online account. It also sounds like you have a credit problem if you were denied because of TransUnion. The bank is not required to give you the reasons, but TransUnion is, since they issued the report. You can find out how to contact them at http://www.transunion.com/corporate/personal/creditDisputes.page.
In addition, you should probably find out what all the credit agencies are saying about you. That IS your legal right, as mandated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). You are entitled to one free credit report each year. The only website, certified by the FTC, for this is at www.annualcreditreport.com. For more information, go to the FTC's website at http://www.ftc.gov/freereports.

Every bank now pulls a credit report. It may be something as simple as a variation of your name on the report or how many times you've applied for credit recently. Somewhere in that letter it should tell you (and if it doesn't it's still within your rights) that you can request in writing the details of why your request to open an account was denied. I think you have 60 days from the date of the letter to do so.

Check out creditinfocenter.com or creditboards.com. Banks do a lot of weird things that people just aren't aware of until something like this happens.
