CVS Wouldnt Refill My Prescription

Posted Tue January 17, 2006, by Marvin C. written to CVS

I called on Sun. Jan. 15th around 5:30 pm to refill my prescription #C 160446 at a store closer to my home. I first spoke to Vinita Shirprashad who said, "We close at 6 pm." The label on my medicine said, "Refillable 1 time(s) before 07-09-2006." Both the pharmacist and pharmacy technician were reluctant to help me. Evidently they looked at something in the computer that said something different -- no more refills. I read to them what the label said, and I said "Somebody's wrong." Before I could finish telling her that I was in pain, she put me on hold. Without getting more information, the pharmacist Martal said, "There's NOTHING we can do" and hung up.

Neither should be fired, but should get more customer service training. In keeping with good customer service, they could've pursued several options:
They might have 1) given me a partial refill; 2) waited until my doctor's answering service called with an updated prescription; 3) called store #5115 to make sure there had been no error; 4) performed some troubleshooting and sluthed the situation to find out exactly where the problem was; 5) offered me other options or alternatives.

Given you a partial refill??? Are you nuts! Its a controlled
substance! Yeah, someone is going to put their DEA License on the
line. You should have refilled it sooner than that or contacted your
doctor long before that. You cant wait until the last minute on things

One other option: Had you already transferred this prescription once?
By law, controlled medications, such as vicodin, can only be
transferred one time. If that was the case, then I'm afraid the only
way you could have gotten medications that night would be to have the
on-call doctor call in an emergency supply to a pharmacy that would be
open long enough for you to get there.
As other people have already said, you may have been looking at an old
bottle that did not accurately reflect the number of refills actually
remaining,
A third possibility is that it was too early for your insurance to
pay. Especially if it's a controlled medication, we will not refill
something until you are most of the way through your current fill.
It's also possible that your doctor specifically stated a refill date
that was later than the date you wanted to fill. Very common with
people on pain contracts. (My favorite sort of pharmacy
customer....NOT!)

Yes, the CVS personnel could have "pursued several options" but that's
not their job. You call for a refill to a location other than the one
that originally filled the rx on a Sunday 30 minutes before they are
going to close and insist that they refill the rx because the bottle
you're holding in your hand says you have one refill remaining. The
pharmacist can only go by what is in the computer and it's not their
job to automatically give partial refills, call other stores,
investigate why you say you have a refill and their system says you
don't or to offer you other options or alternatives - - all 30 minutes
before closing time. The fact you are in pain is not their problem -
- it's yours and you need to plan ahead and work within the
established system.

I agree with the previous posters that this smells like someone is
trying to scam pain pills from CVS - - just by your suggesting that
they "wait until your doctor's answering service called with an
updated prescription" and "call store #5115 to make sure there had
been no error" sounds to me like you knew you didn't have an available
refill and your primary purpose was to get a partial refill without
your doctor's authorization.

CVS personnel do not need customer service training - - it sounds to
me like they did their job very well.

This is a known pill-addict tactic. You set the stage for a confusing,
stressful situation, and hope the pharmacist will give you some pills
out of fatigue or pity.

The fact that your label said "refillable 1 time" doesn't mean you had
a prescription refillable at that moment. You could have been earlier
than your legal refill time. The jar you were holding might not have
been the one from your most recent refill.

I'm not saying you were anything but sincere and truthful. I'm just
saying that your situation had all the marks of an addict's scam. They
recognized it and properly refused to serve you. It's a pity if your
legitimate problem could not be resolved because it had these
earmarks.

Either you waited until the last possible minute to get this refilled
or you didn't really need a refill right then and there and then tried
to go to a different store right before closing. Gee, I wonder why
they didn't trip all over themselves to help you.

Did you ever see the little sticker on the CVS bottle that says "don't
wait, call a day ahead" ? See, that way, if there is a problem, the
time to figure out what is going on exists.

Yes its confusing. It sounds as if someone from CVS entered in the
wrong information when they processed the prescription. It's in there
system but without the refil information. Was this a narcotic pain
medication? If so they probably would be reluctant to issue a partial
refill. I still believe they could have helped you better than what
they did. Good complaint.

I'm confused. Was the problem that the pharmacy was closed, or that
they refused to refill your prescription based on the date? Your
letter is completely unclear.
