This printer is going to get it.

Last year, I purchased two Dell laptops for my family. Along with that purchase, I also bought a Dell printer. The idea was that since they were both Dell products, the ease of use between the laptops and the printer would be fool-proof.

I have never been so wrong.

The printer worked just fine... until just about the time the warranty expired. At about that time, it stopped responding to wireless communication, giving me a 'cannot communicate with the printer' error. Since I knew it was out of warranty and it would cost me to fix it, I decided to just hook the printer up to the laptop via the USB cable. "I've fixed it without spending more money!" I celebrated!

I was wrong again.

Now, the printer won't even respond using the USB cable. How that's even possible is a mystery to me, but there it is. And before you blame the laptop (a Dell product, thank you very much) the problem is the same with my husband's laptop as well.

It's the printer. It's crap. I'd like to take a power tool to it.

At this point, my options are few: give Dell more of my money to fix this stupid printer, which I'm morally opposed to, or buy a printer that isn't a Dell. The printer would probably work just fine but the computer would probably reject it. Because that's been my experience.

I've bought four laptops and two printers from Dell in the past four years. The previous printer did the same thing this one is doing. I stupidly thought that this printer would be better.

I seem to be wrong a lot. Dell will never get another dime of my money.

Stop making crap. And start tech supporting your crap past one year.

You know Dell does have free information online right?

You don't need a personal tech - which costs them money to supply - in
order to troubleshoot something.

Granted it means you'll have to read up on the unit and do all the
work yourself, but they provide free guidelines for it.

I love my HP printer. We use it with my HP laptopm my fiances' Dell
and my son's MSi Netbook and have no issues at all. With the
exception of the ink being a bit pricy, it's a workhorse that I
haven't had a problem with in the near year that I've owned it. We
got ours at Staples and it was a $200 printer we got for about $149 on
sale.

I have also heard great things about the Kodak printers, esp how
affordable the replacement ink is. I couldn't find one that met all
my needs (I needed a print/fax/scan/copy that was wide format, USB
access, wireless and had an ADF!) but the ones I saw were well priced
for the features!

Don't waste your breath on Dell and probably Lexmark as well.
Printers go on sale frequently enough that it's not even worth it to
attempt to fix a busted printer. Es. with back to school sales
coming, there will be planty of them on sale for all the college kids.

If it is happening from both laptops it could be they are configured
wrong. It also could be that a recent update or program that was
installed has made a change.

As for the USB cable, I do know on some printers there is an option to
either use wireless or usb, but you need to enable it for whatever
optiony uo want to use.

Before you consider junking it call a couple of local repair shops and
ask about how much to fix it, a reputable one should charge you about
$40-$60 bucks to configure it. If the wifi chip has died on the
printer it wouldnt be worth fixing and they may charge you a
diagnostic fee to tell you that.

Take Lexmark off the printer list, as they make the crud that dell
sells as "printers" I have a canon printer that works just fine with
my dell portable computer
