DirecTV Equipment Return Scam

After 5 years of loyal DirecTV service, we had to cut our family budget and unfortunately had to drop our DirecTV service. Upon cancelling and closing our account, we were sent an empty box via FedEx Ground that contained a USPS return label for our equipment. Approximately 1 month later, DirecTV automatically deducted $401.74 from our checking account. When asked about the charges, they claimed that the equipment was never returned. We are currently disputing the charges with our bank. DirecTV not only refuses to refund these fraudulent charges but also refuses to track the return shipment. After further research and online searches for "DirecTV Equipment Return Scam" we found that this situation is very common with customers who close their DirecTV accounts. These unethical business practices must be stopped. If you are reading this and are thinking about signing up for DirecTV, STOP and reconsider. If you are already a DirecTV customer and close your account, make sure you cancel the card that they have on file and return the equipment using YOUR shipping label and require a signature upon delivery.
We would like a refund and an apology from DirecTV. We are on a mission to cost DirecTV WAY more than they fraudulently charged us. We will not only stop as many potential customers from signing up for DirecTV, but will cause as many cancellations as possible. We will not be silenced. We will not go away. We will not stop.

It happened to us also. we cancelled our service when we moved, because they wanted to charge us $200 to reconnect it at our new apartment. we gave them our new address, and they sent us a letter saying they were sending a box and shipping labels. after a week we still have not received them. called the company and told them that we did not receive the labels and boxes, and they told us that they will send them. another week passed and still nothing. called again and they said that they will send them. woke up this morning, and we then noticed that we were charged for both of our receivers. just got off of the phone after waiting of the phone, transferring to this person, then to this other person, then another. until...they hung up on me.
WHAT?!??!?!?

Ok, this is happening to me now. I disconnected my service after completing my 2 yr. agreement with Directv. I returned the equipment just as instructed in the boxes they provided and now they are charging me $326 for not returning the equipment.
I "mistakenly" trusted them and figured I would be fine in returning them in the boxes they gave me which I dropped off at a local mailbox company that handles UPS, FedEx, USPS, etc. The # I have from the mailing label comes up as "invalid" on the FedEx site.
Anyway, I just want to be done with this company. It's been nothing but a headache. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get them to drop the charges. I don't have their equipment and I returned it.

We just cancelled with Driectv and have been told 3 different answers about returning the equipment.
1. No-not necessary
2. Yes you will get a box
3. You MAY get an envelope to return the cards only.
WTF? Now after reading over and over how people have been scammed, we decided to do nothing for a while. We should have cancelled a long time ago. The equipment got old, but they would not replace any of it, or even admit it was their issue....wow.

This is why it's important to send things in a way that gives you a signed receipt that is sent back to you as proof of delivery. It may cost some extra dollars but will eleminate the hassles that you are now dealing with.

I had this same problem with Verizon DSL internet service when I cancelled services with them.
I shipped the modem and such back to them in a box they sent me and then they continued to charge me for it another month or two.
After I called and complained, they magically "found" the returned equipment.
I think a lot of companies pull this crap with their customers. They likely do so because some don't bother checking to see if they are still getting billed.
