You want me to throw my dish away, DirectTv?

My family has been with been Directv since 1996. Recently, we had to move and were unable to transfer service to our new address as we do not have a clear line of sight to our apartment.

When I called to terminate service, I asked the technician I spoke with if Directv would be sending someone to uninstall the satellite dish that was located on my old home, as the people who bought the house asked us to have it removed as they do not subscribe to Directv.

Directv does not uninstall dishes. When I asked the technician why this is the case, he told me that they just don't do that and we would have to uninstall the old satellite dish ourselves and throw the old dish away.

This makes absolutely no sense to me - why on earth would Directv not uninstall the dish and re-use it on a new installation somewhere else? It's good business sense, and it's more environmentally friendly than just discarding the dish.

Re-using the satellite dishes would save Directv money and help prevent excess items in our landfills. Why not give it a try?

Does anyone know of a way to reuse a dish for pulling local/digital
channels? If it's going to remain in my yard, I'd like to make use of
it.

Anyone???

This one bugs me even more than the waste of a single dish already
mounted on a house, last weekend my wife and I were cleaning out our
basement and garage in preparation for a move to a new home.

We loaded up my truck and headed for the local dump. While there
waiting in line for our turn to approach the compactor dumpster I
noticed a DirecTV van waiting a few lines over from us at about the
same point we were. I watched as we approached the dumpster at the
same time and was completely blown away as I watched him throw box
after box of brand new satellite dishes, mounting brackets and other
hardware into the compactor not only were they still wrapped in
plastic most were still in their original cardboard packaging.

I asked him "is that defective equipment?" he replied "not defective,
but outdate" I thought to myself how can 100+ mounting brackets,
dishes and other stuff still wrapped in plastic be outdated. So I
asked "Wouldn't it be smarter to take all that steel to a scrap yard
and make a few bucks off of it to return some money back to the
company and maybe help lower the rates of the people using the
service" he replied with "no the company doesn't allow us to do that
we must destroy all equipment when determined to be obsolete" at that
point I simply scratched my head as to how the brackets and mounting
hardware could be obsolete when they are so universal.

So I simply got in my truck, drove home and promptly called DirecTV
and canceled my service which I had for over 12 years now knowing why
my service rates never get reduced and only go up year after year.
Luckily I originally installed my own dish and mounted it on a 3' tall
pole in my yard, not to my house. So instead of actually taking it
down I removed the LNB assembly off of it loosened the elevation set
bolts, laid it down flat, Painted it white and all the birds in my
neighborhood now love the new bird bath.

I just cancelled my DirectTV today--and was surprised to hear they
don't take the dish down. HOWEVER they want the box back along with
the remote--no matter how old it is. I guess when I get my roof done
sometime next year I can have them take the fool thing down, but it
certainly doesn't make me want to go back to them. I am hoping that
Time Warner Cable works out better!
I agree that this is a terrible waste (not reusing the dish).

I had cable then verizon and when each left they left there wires on
the side of my house just snipped the ends off and even left holes in
my walls where the wire came through. So if you have a problem with
Direct tv leaving the dish on your roof it's a small cry from what the
others do.

They are unscrupulous to say the least. Ripped me off (bait and
switch)to the tune of $350.00. They leave the old dish on the roof
anticipating the new owner will subscribe to their service rather than
having to deal with a second dish on the roof should they choose
another provider.
I now have an antenna that cost me about $100 with 0 monthly fee. I
get 30 high def channels. : )

Yes, I certainly agree that these dishes should be recycled by the
company who issued them. It shows a lack of concern in regards to
maintaining and protecting this wonderful planet God has given us to
live on. I will never support them again!

I just called and got the same answer. My tenants moved out and left
the dish. They told me to remove and throw it away. First of all, I
don't have the capability to remove. Two, I shouldn't have to pay
anyone to remove it. Lastly, what a waste of materials. They can't
come remove it and reuse it. I will make sure my family, 500 friends
on facebook, 1,800 connections on Linkedin and my twitter followers
know not to ever order their service. I will never allow any of my
tenants at any of my properties order again.

Everything stated in the responses are correct. Which is exactly why I

they don't uninstall for the same reason dish network will not
uninstall. they don't want to have to fix you roof or siding from
their damages caused by their installer running the lag bolts into it.
dish network refused to repair my siding after their installer ran
lag bolts into it that split the siding. i tried caulking and
painting to seal it but when the wind blew the dish wiggles and broke
the seal open. i gave up on trying to seal it and terminated their
service and just have temporary patch over it right now. they would
not do anything to fix the siding to permanently seal it back up and
to top things off they also charged an addition $15 when terminating
the service to when they have me remove parts off the dish and ship
them back to them in their box with their shipping label. this
company has been notorious for surprises just like the way they raise
rates or drop discounts without letting you know they will be doing
it. instead you just get a bill at the new rate for the past month's
usage whether you would have been willing to keep it at the higher
rate or not. they don't let you know what's coming so you don't have
the heads up to opt out before they hammer you with it.

I wonder is it has anything to do with the big bolt holes it would
probably leave in your roof or siding once they remove the dish.

They probably don't want the liability if a roof leaks or damage
caused by removing the satellite dish. There's not good way to plug up
asphalt shingles other than replacing them...and how do they find a
match?

I went to their website to see if they inform consumers that you are
responsible for the dish removal when you cancel the service.

Even at their big FAQ page, when I searched for "dish removal,"
"remove dish," and other similar phrases, NOTHING came up that would
address that issue and inform me that I am responsible for removing
the dish.

And the little bit I did find covered only one thing: If you are
taking the service with you to your new home, they will move the dish
for you.

I think it's kind of shady that they aren't up front about this. I
think they should give consumers the option at service sign-up: Do
you want to pay $XXX extra right now so that if you ever cancel our
service or move and can't have our service at your new residence, we
will come to your home and remove the dish for you?

They replied to me already and re-explained that they won't be sending
someone out to my house.

I already knew that.

They also stated that once they install the dish on a home, it becomes
the homeowner's property but they will forward my letter on to the
Powers that Be for review.

I guess I don't get why I have to return the converter boxes within 7
days or be charged oodles of cash, but they can't salvage anything
from the dish they hung on the house.

I understand what you're saying, too, Bill, but it seems to me that
this is a huge waste of resources.

M.M.,

What you are proposing makes alot of sense.

However, from a company dollar and sense viewpoint by the time they
pay the tech to go to the home, remove the dish, address any issues
with the anchor area and haul it back to the shop they would probably
be losing money.

The other issue is technology. By the time that dish comes down I bet
technology has ramped up making the dish obsolete and or too costly to
upgrade.

Good luck and be careful on that ladder.
