DIRECT TV SUCKS

Posted Sun May 3, 2009 10:32 am, by Alice B. written to DirecTV, Inc.

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

Visited Mom this weekend…she wanted to lower her cable TV bill….. and when she saw a flyer for 200 channels on DirecTV for ONLY $39.99….she jumped at the chance – a $17 buck a month savings. Instead her first bill was $95 and her second was $102…and now she feels like she’s been taken advantage of.

Three calls and 12 hours later we’ve cancelled the service and we’ll eat the $440 early termination fee…even though A) I had no idea there was a 2 year contract with an early termination fee and B) we don’t have a copy of a contract. She’s going back to cable TV tomorrow.

But – here’s what I’ve learned along the way -

The advertised price is only for 1 TV, doesn’t include any of the “hidden fees” and ONLY once you get the 12 month rebate setup and processed (takes months)– in the meantime you pay full price….
They never mentioned the rebate process…this only came up after we called to complain about the bill…Nice.
Every TV has to have a box. No box. No TV. $5 bucks per month for cheapest box…So much for the guest bedroom and the office where you just want basic cable
If you want a copy of the contract you signed – Good Luck!
The official contract is executed with the install guy – so if he doesn’t give you a copy – then you’re screwed trying to find out who installed your services. The say it’s Sky Link. But they don’t have any contact information for Sky Link…Searching on the web pulls up a few hits, but nothing that makes any sense.
The Advertisements are sneaky and attempt to defraud you at every turn. Borderline corrupt.
They will nickel and dime you at ever opportunity. There are absolutely NO cost savings…infact - it’s by-far the most expensive TV choice once you really start looking at the details.
The installers were unprofessional (see pic) and didn’t provide a copy of signed paperwork
The response time of the box is slow overall making navigation clunky – you will definitely notice it if you’re used to cable.
Feature / Functionality and design are old and tired. Upgrade badly needed.

In the end we were obviously in a contract – even if they couldn’t produce one…Mom remembers signing one. Monthly bills would be $15 more for the first 12 months and then $28-more after that…so we decided the $440 was a break even…and we wanted out NOW….so…Goodbye DirecTV…YOU SUCK.

We all need to face it…it might be 2009…but … Cable-based TV is superior. Cable Intranet is better than DSL, but DSL is okay for lot’s of low-volume users and land-lines are best installed and serviced by local phone companies.

Waive the early termination fee

Its no wonder to me that DirecTV has received an F from the BBB with
so many complaints. They have been sued from numerous states/counties,
including Miami-Dade County, FL due to "deceptive practices related to
the sale of their products and services." I am happy that I work for a
very reputable company (DISH Network) which prides in excellence and
exceeding our customers expectations.

Hi Alice! My name Jesus I actually work at DISH Network and I would
like to say I'm so sorry for the trouble you and your mother were put
through. Up front I want to tell you that there is no pressure, I
would just like to take some time to tell you the difference that DISH
has to offer.
With DISH there are no hidden fees or tacked on charges. Your monthly
bill is discussed completely when you set up service. We go over
programming charges, equipment fees, and installation fees (if any,
most of the time not), and the most forgotten any promotions that are
given to you. Such as, free programming, a discounted rate for a
limited time, and any other services and are free for a specific
amount of time. Any rate increases are also discussed. So that means
if you will get your programming for a lower price for a period of
time you will be informed how much the discount is for how long and
what the price will be after.
Another thing that will be discussed with you is the commitment. It
will be specified for how long and under what circumstances the
cancelations fees will be applied and for how much. Also, the dish
contract is standard for all customers and is openly available at
dish.com/legal.
Although all these policies and courtesies I have went over seem like
something all business should apply, sadly that is not the case in our
society and I’m sorry for that, but DISH is renowned for their
customer service. I totally understand if your mother has gone with
another provider, but if you’re interested, check DISH out at dish.com
for more info. All their information is available there and if you
need help there are chat agents standing by ready to assist you in any
way they can. I hope I have been some help and I thank you for reading
this over.

free channels for 6 months but its the same old movies over and over
again.Im going to my local cable co..they do this because they can get

Hello customer, I would go to bbb.org and file a better business
report. If more people complain, then direct tv will change is ways. I
have been with them for over 1 1/2 yrs and receive Poor Service. I
even talked to a rep at the "Office of the President" who basically
called me a liar. Please do a bbb.org to get your point across. they
will get a bad mark on their business record. thanks

I agree. I signed up through verizon and I do not recall ever
agreeing to their terms. I think Driect TV is terrible and because
they do this to people - they WILL go out of business.

The thing is - they will probably go down hill, lie about their
finances, and one day implode because the lies can not go on any
further.

I will NEVER go with Direct TV again. I will ask whom ever I know to
NOT go with Direct TV. I believe their 'contract' was absolutely not
a contract.

I'm not a big fan of cable companies in general, but the one advantage
of cable is there is no contract. Everything you said in your letter
about DirecTV is the reason we never switched. There are things about
cable I don't like (programing, etc.), but overall I think it's the
most upfront and reliable service, at least in my area.

I think you and your mom made a wise choice even at the cost of the
termination fee.

I am curious about one thing though. Do you have a chance to read the
contract prior to installation, or is it one of those things where the
installer hands it to you at the end without giving you any real time
to read it before signing?

Verizon cable and Fios Are awesome. Cable is second best for internet,
DSL is archaic

Alice B.,

While I don't condone their business model and practices the way to
assure this does not happen to the next person is for potential buyers
to conduct their own due diligence asking every question that is
important to them and aboveall get it in writing take the time to read
and digest before they sign on the dotted line.

Good luck with your effort to get the ETF waived.
