Marketing Payment Protection Plan is a fraud.

I received a call earlier this month from Discover Card stating that they were sending me some literature. I had no idea why they would need to call me to send a letter and they also informed me that the call was being recorded. Again, warning bells should have gone off but for some reason, they didn't. On Saturday, I received a notice from Discover that I had signed up for their payment protection plan. I tried to call them to tell them this couldn't be right but they were closed on Saturdays. I didn't bother to call back on Monday because the second page of the letter I received stated I needed to sign the form and send it back to them in order to fully sign up on their payment plan. I just chalked it up to me misinterpreting the first page of the letter and that I didn't sign up for anything.

Today I received my Discover card statement and there is a charge on it for $12.04 for the payment protection plan I had "supposedly" signed up for. I was furious. I called the 877 number and spoke to someone - she told me that I had agreed to the protection plan by agreeing to accept the literature they sent me. I then told her that my phone call was being recorded and that I would like to listen to it and actually hear myself say that "yes, I want to enroll in the payment protection plan". Needless to say, she was rude and I asked for her supervisor. I was on hold for 10 minutes and spoke to someone else. He was very rude and basically told me that the charge was being reversed and what the heck was I complaining about. This infuriated me. I had two issues - the first being how the heck did I sign up for this payment protection plan (it was fraud as far as I was concerned). No one ever told me anything about signing up for anything - just that I was receiving some literature through the mail. The second issue is how I was treated when I called to complain. I am just furious with this whole mess. I have been a very loyal cardmember since 1992 and have always paid my bill in full all the time! Now, granted, they don't make any money off me in late fees or interest but I charge a lot on my account so they do earn money from me. I am now going to cancel my account with them once I receive my cashback reward from them. In the meantime, I will stop using my card. Anyone else have this issue regarding their payment protection plan?

I would like an apology - stating the customer service people should never have spoken to me in that manner and that their marketing for their payment protection plan needs to be reviewed and revamped!

Same story here...
Just cancelled my Discover Card after many years of being a loyal
customer. Payment Protection services is not even a Discover Financial
Services company, they just operate deceivingly in their name. My call
went very similarly to one of the posts herein, where a bunch of
things were said and promised which were a lie, then the recording was
started. I realized after three months (yes my mistake, but I was a
good Discover card customer so the transactions were amongst many
others). I called them to inquire about the charges and to request a
refund and cancel the service. They did nothing and two months later I
realized they were still charging me. At this point I was furious and
stayed on the phone with Discover card and also went online to dispute
each individual charge in writing.

1) Shame to Payment protection Services for the deceiving marketing
and business practices which are offered essentially to people that
are already having trouble financially or have high card balances

2) Even more shame to Discover Financial Services in Wilmington DE,
for being associated with such a deceiving, contriving, scrooges that
go after people with financial problems. Discover card does NOT stay
behind their customers instead they stand behind such a shameless
company that operates in their name.

3) I have cancelled my Discover Card account after some 25 years, I
tried to talk with account managers and managers on duty at Discover
Financial Services, the only thing they would offer as a next step for
me is to subpoena the recording of the conversation, which is a
partial recording. Yes they know already they only record the part of
the conversation that records someone's agreement. Ok so that would
cost me even more money to subpoena the recording and they have it
already worked out in their favor.

4) The address for Discover Card Executive Office of Consumer Advocacy
is as follows:
PO BOX 17019
WILMINGTON, DE, 19850-7019

If everyone on this list sends their complaints to this address maybe
at least Discover Card and its affiliates will stop stealing money
from other customers.

5) If anyone is interested in starting a Class Suit against Discover
card, it sounds like there will be plenty of people interested in
participating.

6) My next steps:
a) Write to the Discover Card Executive Office of Customer Advocacy
b) File a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau for
deceiving business and marketing practices against Discover Card and
Payment Protection Services.
c) Contact Philadelphia Inquirer to solicit an article and some
investigation of this matter
d) Email anyone on my email list and other email lists of the devious
practices of these two companies and request everyone cancel their
accounts with Discover Card.

OK SO WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS SCAM??

Hello,

I just went through something similar and am still shaking at the way
the clerk treated me when I called to say that we had just signed up
for the Discover card and although we had declined the protection
plan, it was added anyway. I called to complain and to ask that my
account be credited. I had to tell my story 3 times because I kept
being transferred. I finally got to the right department and spoke to
a Dayton Keale (sp?).. who knows if that's his real name. He was
unbelievably rude and arrogant. I ended up screaming at him to cancel
this thing.. I've never lost it like this in my life with a credit
card company. He kept telling me "I don't understand why you would
want to cancel it!".. he sounded like a Kerby Vacuum Cleaner
salesman.. I hung up on him after he told me he had cancelled the
plan but I don't trust it for one minute. If the charge comes through
again, I'm cancelling my Discover card. I called back to complain and
asked to speak to his supervisor. A young woman with an accent (not
that there's anything wrong with that) put me on hold saying she would
speak with her supervisor about it. Several minutes later she came
back and stated that the supervisor was going to listen to the
"recorded conversation" and would take necessary measures if indeed it
was found that Mr. Keale was rude and disrespectful. I am not holding
my breath.. this is obviously B.S. and frankly, it is downright
fraudulent. Why isn't this on the 6 o'clock news? Or maybe it was
and I missed it.

I doubt that trying to contact an Executive at that company would make
a difference. They are obviously all in this together.. It's a sad
world we live in when crooks run companies whose sole purpose seem to
be to exploit others.

Take care and thank you for sharing your experience so that others may
learn from it.

Louise

I had exactly the same thing happen to me. I think fraud is part of
their business plan. No doubt they'll collect from millions of
cardholders that aren't paying attention to their statements. They
need to be in jail. Sorry weasels!!!

This is the credit card companies way of making money off you. They
are a bunch of snakes and will bite you! I agree you should cancel
your card, you should take it one step further by cancelling all of
your cards. If you pay off your balances every month you don't need
them anyway.

Try using Cash to pay for your purchases. You don't need credit cards
to make it in life. Read all of the stories on here about credit
cards. They will get you in the end.

Good Day
