Misleading Promotion

Over the past few months, I signed up for an additional rebate on my Discover Card for gas and "automotive" purchases. As it turned out, I had my car serviced for a brake job at my local service station which accepts the Discover card for payment. The repair was over $600.00 so I thought that I should receive over $30.00 in the form of a cash rebate on that purchase. When my statement came, I was surprised to learn that the repairs were limited to only a half a dozen merchants. I know now that these are the rules, but you advertise this promotion in a vague and misleading way. I spoke with your customer service people and they said that I should communicate my displeasure in writing, so I did. Your response was that I am out of luck and too bad for me.

I want you to know that as a result of this decision, I will no longer use my Discover card other than for paying my daycare provider as this is the only card they accept. I know that you disclosed the details of your promotion in a "legal" way, but I believe that you puposely were deceptive.

I just wanted you (and others who read the Planetfeedback web site) to know that operating in a deceptive way will only hurt you in the long run. I did not put my personal information about my card or name in this letter as it will be made public on a web site, butYou may contact me at the information privately provided to you.

I would ask that in the future, you change the way that you advertise a promotion. Honor the intent of your offering and credit me with my rebate that I feel you misled me about.

Unfortunately, it is up to us to pay attention to those details and
read the disclosures. I happen to know that Discover makes this info
readily available in numerous ways when they have these promos. The
bottom line is people don't take the time to read it. Usually you can
look up participating merchants right through the DC website and at
the very least a customer service rep can look them up for you. As
with many things, it's better to check first. FYI, they also limit
total Cashback earned on these promos so you may want to look into
that, too.
