Dish Network Should Remove Pay-Per-View Charges

Posted Wed May 14, 2008 12:00 pm, by Mary Y. written to Dish Network (Echo Star)

Write a Letter to this Company  |  Rate this Company

We have a 4 year old grandson who is a high functioning autistic. Without our knowledge, he ordered pay-per-view (7) on March 7th. I called Dish on 4-11-08, when I received my bill spoke to "Anna". She said she would remove the charges from our bill.I asked her to put a lock on so he could not order again. I asked if she could check the beginning of April to see if there were any more ordered. She said she could not.

When I got my bill that is due now I found that he had ordered 10 movies on April 4 and 5. I called again & was told they could take 3 off but no more. I spoke to a supervisor & a manager was to call back. We're still waiting.

I want all these pay-per-views removed from my bill. Had we known that we could have had him "locked out" this would not have happened. My husband and I are on social security and don't have the money to pay for these contested charges.

I will say that at my parents house (I'm not sure if they have Dish or
Direct TV) it is quite easy to order movies. I've almost done it on
accident more than once. There have also been other adults besides
myself comment on this as well.

That being said, unless these downloads occurred at night as one
person suggested, there is no way a child should have been left alone
long enough to order 17 movies. I realize these weren't all ordered
at the same time, however I have a hard time believing that nobody had
a clue this child had ordered movies they weren't supposed to. The OP
didn't catch the grandson even once?

I think that unfortunately the OP should be liable in this case. Dish
is being nice enough to take 3 of the PPV charges off. And, to their
credit, they have no way of knowing whether these PPV charges were
racked up by your grandson or yourself.

I sympathize with you. My son did the same thing when he was about 2
(only once, luckily for me, and it actually turned out to be a movie
my husband wanted to see, so we taped it and called it a Father's Day
gift, lol). But I'm going to agree with Dish Network on this one. It
was very nice of them to take off 10 charges. And as for them not
telling you that a lock could be put on the PPV, check the materials
they gave you when you signed up. It'll be in there. And that,
unfortunately, covers their obligation as far as telling you what's
available.

I have Dish and they are really good about frivolous charges. Call
and really plead your case. I've you've been with them for a while
AND you are a loyal customer, they will most likely remove the charges
to KEEP you as a loyal customer.

Best wishes.

see if they will let you pay a portion at a time....some sort of
payment arrangement? ALso, since it is your grandson, why not ask his
parents to foot part of the bill?

I used to work for dish and we had a once in a lifetime credit PPV
policy. I'm sorry to hear your son is ordering all of these movies,
but you need to be responsible for his actions, autism or not. My son
also has high-functioning autism, and I get the fact that you are
trying to use that in order to get credits on your account and if that
is what you are doing it is wrong. Your son's condition shouldn't
matter in this case. Any child can be capable of ordering PPV's given
no locks were set and they knew how to do it. You need to lock out
the TV and take this as a lesson learned. You were very lucky you got
as many credits as you did!

How much are these movies? Are we talking $35 in charges? Or $100?

My fourteen year old son has high functioning autism too... so I
totally understand your current situation. My son downloads games on
his grandmother's cell phone (the bill is in my name though) ~
sometimes in the middle of the night. I'm always surpised when I get
my cell phone bill.

On my television, I can "block" certain channels and put in a pin
number of my choosing and then only I (or my son's grandmother) can
unlock the channel for viewing. I do the same with home computer.

I don't know when he's doing this ~ but I know many HFA children who
get up in the middle of the night, like mine does, to do these sorts
of things. They can tend to roam. If you don't have the ability to
lock up you t.v., may I suggest removing the batteries from the t.v.
remote before you retire to bed. Save your wallet and give you some
piece of mind.

Good luck.

My ex is a former employee of Echostar and fielded calls like yours
all the time. From what I remember, you need to go through a
complicated process in order to purchase a pay-per-view movie, which
is why Echostar removes very few of these charges from a customer's
bill.

If you are aware that your grandson is a high-functioning autistic,
how was he unsupervised long enough to order a total of 17 movies??
When my son was 4, even though he wasn't the brightest bulb in the
lamp, things like television remotes were kept out of his reach.

I don't have dish by April S. Thu May 15, 2008 @ 7:57 PM

When I had satellite TV (DirectTV), we could put locks on ourselves,
via the remote, without any assistance from DirectTV whatsoever. I
find it hard to believe that Dish Network doesn't offer the same
function. If they don't, I have to assume it's so they can make a
little more money.

I can understand your dilema but they were gracious enough to remove
13 of the 17 pay-per-view movies from your account already.
At least you now have this program locked out so these can no longer
be ordered. However if your grandson is a high functioning autistic
child as you state, do not put it past him to find a way to unlock
this block. They are cunning and can usually find their way around any
obstacle.
