Dish is unwilling to work with a customer

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH DISH!!! On the behalf of my roommate I called Dish on the 8th of Oct because their rate was so high (over $50.00 for the Bronze package - their lowest). They offered a reduction of $15.00 a month if he agreed to a two year contract. He changed his mind over the week end and asked me to call and cancel so I called on Monday morning ( the 12th) at 10:30 to to cancel that agreement. They declared the call of the 8th was a had a verbal contract and would charge $15.00 a month for the full two years to cancel. My roommate has not been billed and it was just 3 business days ago and they are unwilling to remove the two year requirement.

My roommate would like the two year contract to be canceled so he can change service. He does not want them any more!!!

Next time it might be better if your roommate actually makes the phone
calls and agrees to service changes since their name was on the
account.

If you're not on the account, it may have been illegal for them to
change his service by talking to you. Look into that. It may be your
ticket out.

your roommate may have to read the fine print to see if there's any
"grace period" during which he can get out of the contract without
paying an early termination fee

The only other thing i can suggest is looking up local state laws.

I know back when I lived in Illinois there was a state law that if
someone came to you where you lived and had you sign a contract, you
had 3 days to change your mind.

So there's a possibility that other states might have something
similar, but ... it's not a guarantee.

however... there is a possibility your roommate will be stuck with an
early termination fee. he might not like it, but it's a distinct
possibility.

Unfortunately once you agree to it and they setup service you are
stuck with the contract. Its rough, but deciding an hour after the
contract to 3 days to 3 years doesnt void the contract.

Only thing I could sugges to is check into putting your account on
hold. DirectTV let me put mine on hold for 6 months, then another 3
months and I only got charged for 2 months of service.

Though that was because I moved somewhere that didnt allow dishes on
the roof.
