Fed Up
Posted Sun August 19, 2012 11:43 pm, by Cortney B. written to Domino's Pizza, Inc.
Write a Letter to this Company
I have ordered pizza from Domino's for the last time. Each and every time I order, I am met with some underpaid delivery driver who can't seem to know what the correct change should be. I have family who work for Domino's in another state, and they have told me that the qualifications to be hired include a basic math test, so I assume it's just a momentary lapse in ability at each delivery that causes either me to be shorted on change, or be met with a blank stare and admission from the driver that they cannot calulate change on their own. Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to be cheap here. In fact, I tip often, and quite large when I can afford to. However, being treated like an idiot by the delivery drivers, as if I didn't calculate the change in the hour+ it took before my order arrived, is not worth the money I sweat for. I have several other complaints, but it's the drivers' lack of simple math skills that got me to voice my concern.
I suggest that Domino's offer a remedial math course for all employees, starting with the store managers all the way down to the ones making the pizza. This will include any and all drivers. Dishwashers can be excluded, as they've got it hard enough. I would also like to suggest some sort of customer service course, because calling the store to complain was answered by a manager that basically told me he didn't care, to have a nice day in a rather condescending tone. Most of their commercials talk about building a better pizza, or a better vehicle. How about building a better company, and leave what isn't broken alone? I may be just one person, a tiny drop in their financial pool, but I would hope that my disappointment will prompt a hope for better service in the future for those stupid enough to order from Domino's.

Pizza Driver here, for Domino's.
The blank stare isn't from stupidity, it's because no one wants every single penny in change back. It's been over 5 years since I've given someone coin change and the stores don't even get us coins to make change with.
We wonder how it is that someone can afford pizza, but no tip?

Your condescending letter makes you sound like a not so nice person. Also, just because you don't like your experiences at Domino's doesn't mean people who order from them are stupid.

Here's what you do. You hand your money to the pizza guy, and then you tell him how much you want back. I did this twice in the last week, and it worked fine. For instance, one night, I handed the guy $30 and asked for $5 back. (This game him a $6-$7 tip.)

How would you feel if your place of employment required you to do that? How would your co-workers feel? How would anyone in management feel?

News flash for you - just because someone doesn't wiz through a math problem in 30 seconds for you doesn't mean they're stupid, or in need of remedial math.
Personally I would be OFFENDED if my company forced me into some class like that. No way in hell should any company treat a worker like that... just because a customer was miffed.
I'm not stupid myself. I spent over 13 years as a technician working on a wide range of electronic equipment, ranging from radios and radars to computers, and physical networks. That's not even getting into all the web design and programming I started learning.
But when it comes to sudden math questions, I have to stop and think about it for a moment or two.
ESPECIALLY if I've been working on something completely different.
Now you might say "But it's so easy!" or whatever, but you've been thinking about it specifically. Or you've perhaps chosen to put this above all else... however that doesn't mean others are obliged to put the same value on it.
The driver is balancing much more than just YOUR order and your spot-quiz math. He/she is negotiating traffic, handling multiple orders, just for starters.
Yet somehow the driver isn't good enough because he can't spit out a math problem in 2 seconds for you, when you've had much more time to figure out how much change you want back.

You have the advantage of an hour + to figure out your change. The driver has lots of orders and has a few seconds to do the math at each delivery. Maybe you should let them take another 60 minutes to figure it out before handing over your pizza. As McJohn (below) pointed out, most people let pizza delivery drivers keep the change or say "Just give me X back". A lot of people have a hard time doing math in their head, especially when someone is standing watching them. This is why some restaurants have tip guides to help the diner figure out 10, 15, and 20%.
You called to complain that a driver wasn't great at math. I'm not sure what you expected the manager to say.
