Disappointed in my anniverary dinner

We went to the Melting Pot in San Antonio for our anniversary. We typically only go once every two years and after tonight, we remembered why. We had no issues with reservations and they put us in one of the nooks, which was very nice.

The first irritant occurred when we were trying to choose a wine. The server asked if we had picked one and we explained we were looking for a particular CA wine. He did not offer to check or anything, but suggested we look in South American wines, which made no sense.

We got the wine pairings, which were mostly mediocre. The dessert wine was a Cabernet Sauvignon, which made no sense really and tasted awful when eaten with the chocolate.

The service and attention to detail are just not evident at this restaurant. We forget every now and again and wind up back there. Tonight, we wished we had gone to Luce's or Bohanan's or Bella instead. If I spend $124, I'd like to not feel annoyed when I leave.

We did not eat most of our cheese fondue and asked that it be packaged to go. Will, our server, came back with the apples, veggies and bread in a container with a little cheese drizzled on top. I said I had expected the cheese to be separate as how would I heat that up and asked how he would package a chocolate fondue, he said the same way! Why in the world would someone want their fondue that way?
After the cheese fondue, I had placed my fondue forks, fork and knife on the plate. Will took the fondue forks off and said we would need to use them again. I told him I wanted clean ones, that's why those were on the plate.

For the amount of money that is spent on a special occasion there, I expect a commensurate level of service. I can go to one of a large number of very nice restaurants in that price range--and receive impeccable service including clean silverware!
The same level of service is experienced through the entire meal. The manager came by after we had the check and my husband and I shared some of these concerns with him. Not once did I hear "oh that should never have happened". Either he just didn't care, which I felt was the case, or that's just the way the place is expected to run.

I think the fondue experience can be great and would love it if this Melting Pot could be improved. It's pretty bad that I want to tell all of my friends and family to remind me not to go when I forget in another couple of years and want to try again. I am exceedingly disappointed that I chose to celebrate our anniversary in your restaurant.

Why do you go out so rarely?

1) He did not offer to check or anything,

Most servers I've seen already KNOW what's in stock at their
restaurant. Asking them to check is silly if they already know it's
not something they carry.

2) Dessert Wine.

AFAIK you don't pair sweet ones with chocolates. But you do pair
boldness levels. A bolder wine for a bolder chocolate.

3) reusing forks - most patrons do this. Otherwise the scullery would
be working overtime and they'd run out soon.

Maybe it's me but... i sense you were expecting diamonds for the price
of pearls.

Yes it was 124. However in my opinion the level of attention you seem
to be asking for, i would personally pair with some place like "41" in
Sydney.

A place where yes, you got new silverware with each meal, special
paired wines (if you wanted - we opted out), and where you feel like
you're eating like royalty.

then again you also pay around 150 a person there too for that kind of
service.

Just a note for you, Cab can be paired with dark chocolate very
well---one of my favs!

There is a good link to review if you want to try it on your own.

I am surprised after speaking with the manager nothing was done.

Sounds like you were not happy with your server. Anytime this occurs,
ask for a manager and request a different server. If he will not
comply, that is your clue to leave. Message sent to management and you
are happier.
