My Gateway Monitor is Now a Desk Weight
Posted Sat June 2, 2007 12:00 pm, by Teresa S. written to Gateway, Inc.
Write a Letter to this Company
I have been a customer of Gateway computers for almost ten years. I have even purchased systems for my friends and grand parents. I have never had problems with Gateway until recent years. Your customer service and willingness to help your repeat customers has diminished immensely. I could always call Gateway in the past and get immediate attention and help without long automated answering systems. I could ask questions without waiting on hold forever or having to pay for the answers. Things have seriously changed at Gateway, Inc. and I highly doubt your business is improving because of it when everyone I hear talk about Gateway anymore says they won't use them again because of their service and inferior products. I bought a new computer system from Gateway anyway though, through the Home Shopping Network. I chose the Gateway 2100 model monitor (serial number MRW5950N09359) to go along with my computer. This is one beautiful monitor and I loved it. I don't use my computer much so I didn't get a lot of use from the monitor when it died exactly one month out of warranty. I immediately contacted Gateway who, as I suspected, told me they could not help me. The next thing that happened did surprise me. I offered TO PAY Gateway to fix it and offered to PAY for shipping to get it to you. I was turned down. Now this I cannot believe. This monitor is barely used and was only 13 months old when it died and there cannot be a whole lot wrong with it. It can't be that serious. The computer still works so the monitor may have a bulb burned out or something, who knows? All I know is that it won't come on. The blue light flashes and nothing. So, I have taken to several repair places and they won't touch it. So, now I have a 21 inch gorgeous paperweight, well actually, it would hold down a lot more than paper...a desk weight, I guess.
So, what should I do?
I cannot understand why a company who initially was so awesome with customer service would bascially tell me, your customer with years of buying Gateway products, too bad. What can I do with "too bad." I can never buy Gateway again and I can tell everyone what a horrible experience I had. Believe me, I have been trying to get this resolved for over six months. This monitor has been sitting here for months while I try to get answers. So, I ask you, why won't you fix your own product and allow me to pay you to do it so I can get a least another year or two out of it? I mean the system was around $1700, not cheap. Don't you think two or three years would be a more appropriate lifespan than 13 months for your products? Why don't you all write to me and surprise me with agreeing to fix this thing so I can use it again? I am not asking for a new one. I am not asking for you to fix it under warranty because it died only one month out of warranty (which you should do). I am not lying and saying it was under warranty when it wasn't. I am simply offering to pay YOUR COMPANY to fix YOUR PRODUCT. Now, doesn't this seem reasonable to you? Please help me with this. I cannot believe your customer service could possibly be this poor.
Sincerely,
A lifetime customer (maybe)
Teresa

Ok here is a question. I have a gateway 900g monitor and it turns on ok and the light is lit. when i turn the monitor off then turn it back on i get the screen for a second or two then it buzzes and goes to a black screen. I bought it in 2005, so i know it is old now and been used a lot. can this be repaired cheeper than a replacement? With no income atm i want to do what is easiest.
Thanks,
Dee

Same experience here. I will never by a Gateway monitor again. And it turns out they were made by Samsung... Never touching them for computer monitors either.
We have a Samsung plasma TV... the main board on that need replacing, luckily inside the warranty.
Makes you wonder doesn't it?

I, too, bought a Gateway computer from HSN that came with this model 2100 monitor. I, too, now have a lovely oversized paperweight! In my conversation with Gateway, after she told me my warrenty was expired, she did tell me to hold a flashlight at an angle against the screen. She said if I could see anything with the light then the backlight was burnt out. Of course, I couldn't see anything and she said for $60 I could have 15 minutes of phone consultation in which they may or may not be able to help me. Thanks, but no! This was my first Gateway purchase. It will be my last Gateway purchase! I am now running my new computer off my very old, very bulky monitor until I can afford to get a new one. Yes, I knew there was a warranty expiration date, as there is a warranty on everything, but when you make a large purchase on what you think is supposed to be a nice computer, it's extremely disappointing to have it die right after the warranty runs out. This was supposed to be an investment for me, not a "buy yourself a new monitor every year" purchase! In the past I had heard good things about Gateway and that is what led me to purchase the Gateway brand. Never again!!! I can't afford their expensive cheapness!

Same problem here, Teresa. 21" Gateway with rave reviews all over the net, boasting 50,000 hours of life, dead within 15 months of intermitent use. I have gotten down to extracting the burnt lamps myself but cannot find anyone to sell me replacements. If Gateway hadn't closed all their offices years ago, they'd be getting it back just like the Discount Tire commercial.

Gateway is not in the business of monitor repair! You will have to get 3rd party repair if you want to fix your LCD. Gateway does not even make the monitors. It is contracted to a third party.....
Now, if a LCD defects during the limited warranty duration, then GW will replace it (NOT REPAIR)free of charge (as long as the old one is sent back). The original monitor will need to be returned using the prepaid materials.
Gateway's third party will repair the monitors, if possible, and sends them out as refurbished replacements.
You may want to contact TELEPLAN directly to see if they will repair your monitor. Though, it is not worth it. Your item should be considered consumed. You should be done with it. Otherwise, you can try a local electronics repair shop (maybe an old mom and pop TV/VCR repair store)
For your satisfaction, here is the information for Teleplan.

Teresa,
Has your problem been resolved yet? if not i would be willing to look at your monitor free of charge (if you pay shipping) and fix it for the cost of parts and most likely a very small amount.i am currently working on one of these monitors and they are great looking. i had to swap out all ten capacitors on the power board because the upper lamp kept frying it. it sounds like the caps may be bad on your power board if it doesnt stay on. hopefully the caps were just faulty because it is hard to get ahold of these lamps, i know im still trying. anyway if your interested email me at monsterpatch@yahoo.com.

Teresa,
I have a Gatyeway paper(desk) weight LCD monitor also just 13 months old that died around the same time yours did!!! Mine is a model 900G and I bought the system from Costco. Actually, Costco may honor a return - I am going to check with them -although I may need to return the whole system if they won't swap the monitor. I am pissed. I'm now using a 17inch CRT that's about 6 years old and it's still working fine. I will post again after contacting Costco on this. Dirk - Boise, Idaho

I know gateway has made some major changes in the past few years, but I think it would be silly to get rid of a service center. But if they don't have one, there isn't much they can really do. I'm pretty sure they were very close to disappearing of the face of the universe forever, so gateway not having a service center doesn't seem very far fetched.
I know you offered to pay for the shipping and the service. Honestly they did do you a favor, it would most definitely have cost you more to repair it then to replace it. I think the customer service person should have told you this. I'm having trouble finding any info on your monitor, so if it was a LCD then fixing it would have cost you a fortune, since those are complex, its more then just a "bulb" (im not even sure they can be fixed), and if it was a CRT (big boxier ones) at 21 inches it would have cost you a fortune to ship because they are VERY heavy.
As far as the warranty goes... its a shame that it died right after the 1 year mark, but they are under no obligation to fix it anyway. Yes, it would be nice if they did, just as it would be nice for them to send me a brand new monitor for free just because. (hey if you're reading this gateway, feel free to really ship me a free monitor ;)

newegg.com has a 22" acer lcd monitor for $259 with a 3 yr warranty
they done you a favor by not fixing it, what if you pay this and it breaks down again after 13 months when you only has 12 months of coverage ?
the only thing close to what you had on gateways site now is a 22" at $379.99 and its only 1yr warranty.
its always best to shop around and go with one that has a good warranty in case of problems like this

I don't think this letter will go anywhere. I just don't know where to start....
While I do see how you are approaching the issue, I fail to see why it's an issue at all. Their end of the bargain was to warranty the monitor for a year and you're calling a month after that and claiming you hardly used it. Does this somehow extend the warranty?
The entire loyalty and history with the company is nice to mention in passing, but it's overuse leads one to wonder what exactly do you expect this company to do? Somehow take this into account to extend the warranty on the monitor?
Why don't you all write me agreeing to fix this thing..... it cost 1700 ... not cheap..why not fix it....why not two or three years instead of twelve...and somehow trying to "shame" the company into fixing it... and on and on.
This smells funny to me. Did you not know, when you purchased it, that the warranty was One Year? Was it three and they shortened it without letting you know?(That WOULD be a REAL complaint) Why did you purchase it knowing that? The time to bring that up was then, not now. You purchased through HSN in the first place, they DO offer extended warranties so if it meant so much, why not buy an extended warranty through HSN OR Gateway?

The warranty information comes with every computer component. The fact that you did not use the monitor much really does not factor into the equation. Warranties are, generally, specific by time period. Your computer was beyond that time period so, they were right to deny your request to fix the monitor under warranty.
Further, Gateway is not in the business of computer repair. I also need to ask myself why a computer repair shop will "not touch it." My guess is that the hassle they will have to deal with is not worth the problem. As another poster stated, the cost of repair and/or shipping would cover the price of a new monitor. That way you would have a new warranty, etc. It seems like a more practical solution.

For the cost of shipping both ways and the repair you can go out and purchase a nice flat panel monitor that you will enjoy much more anyway. Check out Best Buy or Circut City, they are always havong sales on them.

A few things you might try:
Be sure that the monitor is securely plugged into the computer. Yes, I know you're not stupid. But this has happened to me at least once. One of us did something to another connection and knocked it loose.
Also, try adjusting the brightness and screen size. On our first computer, the screen controls were located on the bottom of the monitor, underneath. Our screen size kept getting smaller and smaller, and we couldn't figure out why. We were getting really frustrated, when, one day, I saw our 2-year-old climb up to the monitor and fiddle with the controls that were underneath. SHE could see them from her vantage point. We couldn't.
Ask friends and neighbors for a teen who is really into computers. Our neighbor kid has helped us out a couple of times. We paid him for his time and expertise. If nothing else, the teen can recommend a replacement for you.
