While on vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC, my family and I went to dinner at the Golden Corral on Kings Road (29572) on August 15, 2008 at 5:45 pm.
I have three sons aged 12, 8 and 4, so the Golden Corral provides them with just about every possible dinner option, including healthy fresh fruits and vegetables, so dining there makes for a relatively fuss-free experience. My youngest son has a peanut allergy, however, so sometimes, it can be a little tricky for us to find restaurants that are willing and able to provide us with sufficient information to make as sure as possible that the food will be safe for him to eat.
When we went to this particular Golden Corral, however, we were thrilled over the attitude and helpfulness displayed by Mike of the Management Team. I explained that my son has a peanut allergy and asked if he could tell me if the ice cream was peanut free. I also explained that I wasn't asking for guarantees, but just information about the product so that we could make an informed decision. I totally realize that there are peanuts on the premises and even near the ice cream machine. We don't ever expect restaurants to make a guarantee that something is peanut-free, but are overjoyed if they are willing and able to provide enough information for an informed decision. Mike went so far as to explain which desserts would be peanut-free (including peanut oil and potential cross contamination) and offered, unsolicited, to walk the entire buffet with me in order to show me which options would be safe. Given that we've been to restaurants that won't even provide information on the ingredients they use (national chains, not mom and pop places), as well as restaurants that don't have a grasp on how food allergies "work," Mike's knowledge and willingness to help us was outstanding!
Unfortunately, I could not locate another manager to pass along this information in person at the time of our visit, but wanted to let the Golden Corral Corporate Office know, as well as anyone who might read this shared letter.

I just read the other day that a bunch of baseball statiums have "peanut free zones" where they have cleaned and sanitized EVERYTHING there. There are NO peanuts to be consumed/sold there or even walked through the area. There are some that have even cut them out all together. I can't remember which
ones. But I bet you can find a list online.

I've never been to a Golden Corral but now I might go to one if I see them in my travels.
It's wonderful to read such a great story and about an exceptional employee. I hope Mike gets recognized for his great performance and knowledge!

Thanks for the nice letter...I know they will appreciate it as they do respond to any letters they receive.
Golden Corral has turned out to be one of the better buffet places. The staff is always courteous, helpful and will even get you something from the buffet. I dropped a piece of chicken on the floor when placing my plate on the table and balancing my cane. The employee was very gracious in getting me another piece.
And their food is always fresh and the buffet kept neat and containers filled.
We always leave them a nice tip when we go. They are very attentive to their customers and deserve it.

This is really great to hear. I'm glad you happened upon such a well-prepared restaurant.
I hope that if Mike wasn't the recipient of chain-wide training, they take advantage of Mike's knowledge to help train people at other restaurants in the chain.
Thanks for sharing this letter with everyone.
