It's So Simple a Caveman Can Do It, So Why Can't GEICO?
Posted Sat August 11, 2007 12:00 pm, by Jerry W. written to Government Employees Insurance Company (GEICO)
Write a Letter to this Company
GEICO is stalling and will not make payment for an accident and remove the vehicle which is a total loss from the account. My wife unfortunately wrecked her 2006 Cobalt on 6/28/2007. The vehicle was listed as a total loss 7/5/2007. As of 8/10/2007 GEICO has failed to make payment. I have completed and returned all forms that I have been requested to complete. GEICO refuses to give me a straight answer for why there is such a long delay in payment and removal of the car from the account. I have already added a replacement vehicle. I have no choice but to terminate my relationship with GEICO and seek legal action to force GEICO to make payment as required. This is so simple a caveman could do it but GEICO can not. With service like this, GEICO will go the way of the caveman---extinction.
1. Make prompt payment to GMAC
2. Remove the 2006 Cobalt from the account
3. Apologize for the unreasonable delay in service
4. Train staff better
5. Provide answers to e-mails rather than state it needs to be discussed by call...the purpose of the e-mail is to get a paper trail to prove action is being taken

You may have to transfer your car title to the insurance company. That's what's required in Iowa and Minnesota, anyway (we don't turn the license plates over, though). Have you *called* Geico to find out what the wait is? Don't rely on emails in this matter.

I like your letter. It's actually quite clever and catches the reader's attention. I'd feel uncomfortable threatening a lawsuit while trying to bypass standard operating procedure. Any paper trail can be started by first researching what "Totalling" a vehicle entails,(Did we read our policy? Are we following their procedure? Did we submit an accident report? A copy of the company's appraisal report? Did we sign over the title? Return the Plates? etc) and following the rules the company uses instead of insisting they do things some other way.
It's so simple, even a Caveman CAN do it. Do you think the Gecco will run faster if they apologize for a delay that you may be causing?

I find their ads very funny, but I don't miss the company. My rate shot through the roof, and I found State Farm would insure me for less than half. I have been very happy with State Farm and never regretted the switch.

I love this letter. It looks like their slogan is coming back to bite them in the bum!! Very cute. I can't believe those cavemen got their own show.
I hope that GEICO expedites your payment and takes care of your account soon.

Wow. Talk about lousy service. Stories like this makes me glad I'm with USAA. Their response to me years ago was almost immediate. At the very very least your vehicle should have been taken off of your account the very first week (if not day) of your request.

I don't know what state you live in but do a search for Department of Insurance for your state.
On their website should be a consumer section and information on how you can file a complaint against GEICO (or any insurance carrier for that matter) about this problem.
The state will then forward the complaint to GEICO and they will have a certain amount of tme (usually 2 business weeks) to respond back to the state regarding the complaint.
I would also recommend making a copy of the complaint when you complete it and send it to GMAC for their information.
