i want to print in only black even though my officejet pro 8600 has an empty color cartrige. i understand that it is to prevent the printheads from drying out, however that is my choice. or should be anyways.

release a software update enabling use of black when other colors may be depleted

I agree, it is VERY upsetting and its just a way for them to make more
money. I only ever use black ink, I only print out letters, no photos.
Haven't replaced the color in ages because I don't really use it. The
color ran out awhile ago (due to print recipes I guess) but I had
plenty of black. Well 3 weeks ago the black finally ran so I went out
and bought a new cartridge for around $25. Installed it and much to my
dismay, I could not print a simple black shipping label because the
color cartridges were empty! I had to run out and fork over another
$40 after taxes for colored ink JUST SO I COULD PRINT IN BLACK! I
could have just bought a brand new printer for the same price as all
that ink! I will not be buying any more HP products, once this ink is
gone I'll buy a new non-HP printer!

I posed that question to a big box store associate with regard to my
HP 4635 and my desire to do the same as you request.

I was told that to make black some of the colors within the color
cartridge are used.

He said it with a straight face.

Therefore, I share.
