Blue dye from Huggies stained my childs thighs

Posted Fri July 17, 2009 12:00 pm, by Maile B. written to Huggies Diapers

Write a Letter to this Company

I've bought Huggies for both my children; it is my preferred brand. Last week I bought a box at Walmart in Honolulu and have noticed since using them that my child's inner thighs are blue.

The color from the diaper material seems to be coming off on her skin.

I'm concerned about the 'ink' on her skin, and haven't used a product yet that can take off the blue stain.

Full refund (large box)

Explanation of why the Huggies I bought at Walmart do this

Information on whether the blue dye is toxic

Information on how I can get it off my childs skin

This happened to us also. But we thought it was bruising! Even the
doctor thought it was bruising to my child's inner thighs! It didn't
come off after a bath and truly looked like bruising. When I noticed
a small bluish area on the inside of my child's pants, I got
suspicious. I rubbed the "bruised" area with alcohol and it faded a
little. We used huggies for our last child and have been using them
on the second for over a year; never have we had this problem. We
also bought ours at Sam's Club...interesting.

Wow I did not think much of the blue die thing... My 2 year old who
should not be in diapers had the same thing happen to him but I
thought nothing of it untill we just bought a big box from costco and
my little man started with diarrhea.. You see my husband told me that
he keept finding some sugar or salt substance that was falling out of
the diapers.. whe thought nothing of it.. but my son started to get a
bad bad rash all over his testies and now it'z all over.. I didnt but
2 and 2 together untill I remembered what my husband said about that
salt or sugary stuff he keep finding.. so I opened a diaper and that
it all was a clear sugary substance falling out of the diaper... I am
wrote to the huggies company and ill see what they have to say... o an
im going to buy some different pampers as soon as I send this...
My baby's legs are so swollen and red from the rash... I feel so bad
for him..

well thank you all for Sharing your story's... I didnt think much of
the blue dye on his legs. or that fact that I have found more than 5
diapers that where ripped on the side... or the part to close the
diaper was missing.. I never thought to my self look "it up" now I
will pay way more attention...

again I thank you all

I also just had the same problem, he also has had a rash around the
same time on his private area and also on the legs where the blue
marks are. I am so very angry with
huggies right now!!

I just took my 10 month old to the doctor today becuase of this! Poor
baby was ordered a bunch of blood tests. We originally thought it was
her walker causing this and/or the dye from the walker. My husband
just brought it to my attention after reading these posts that we just
purchased Huggies Night Time diapers, size 4, from Babies R Us around
the same time we first started noticing the ink gray/blue spots in her
inner thighs.

It makes sense, the urine in combination with her sweat at night,
causes the ink to heat up and stain. We never had this issue before
becuase we have always used Huggies Pure & Natural and Seventh
Generation.

I'm calling the manufacturer tomorrow, this is outrageous. This is my
third child over a span of 14 years....I've seen my share of diapers.
This has never happended to my kids before.

What sucks though, is that we finally found a diaper that doesn't leak
at night! ;(

Same thing happened to me. Guess Huggies didn't bother to fix the
problem as these original posts are from months ago. I am switching
brands. There is no excuse for this.

I just bought Pampers (size 6) and the dye came off on my daughters
inner thighs as well. This is very disturbing because why is that much
color being used on a product that is for babies. When I contacted
Pampers all they suggested was to use warm water and soap to remove
the dye and they would send me a coupon for more. And this the
reassurance we get from large corporate companies! I am floored by the
whole response.

This is happening to my 18 month old son too, and we have used Huggies
on him since birth. there was never a problem until this last batch!
I am a bit freaked out. We did not buy ours at WalMart, but we did
buy them at Sam's - a WalMart corp store. Is there a connection?

Come to think of it... you really should contact Huggies with the lot
number printed on the package.

If there was an issue with the diapers, then having the lot number
will help them determine if the entire lot had issues or if it was
just a box or two.

For example, once Mom bought a can of regular green beens but when she
opened them they were "french cut". She brought them back to the
store... The manager didn't believe her but decided to open a can from
the same lot anyway just to see.

The second can was identical... Labeled as regular green beens, but
contained French cut.

So they pulled the entire lot from the shelves.

Now... in a case like this... it won't be so easy for walmart to
verify your complaint. Unlike the cans... they can just open a
package and say "yep, these will dye your kid's legs"... which is why
it's better to contact the company instead

and ... well i hope the dye is faded by now?

call huggies they will find a way to look into it and compensate you.
i had 2 diapers that were damaged from the factory i got $20 in
coupons!! as much as $8.00 off on one. also there would not be any
toxic dye in them may have been a minor over dye of the color try
using lemon juice it is like an acid but safe on clothes and skin
otherwise conatct your doctor as it could also be something else too.

in regards to why walmart had this it is actually auto box and deliver
there is no actual " i'll take that box" ordering done it woudl have
just been this box from fac A goes here and fac b goes there kinda
thing.

also when you do call in be sure to have the box with you and a diaper
form it as they will need the tracking numbers off the velcro onthe
diaper and the top of the box to track which machine it was
manufactured on to find out what happened.

Each bag of diapers has a toll free phone number also listed for
complaints. Try calling them to see if they know of other such
incidents and also what type of dye this is.
Kimberly-Clarke who is the parent company has a toll free number
1-800-665-9773. You can leave a message and they will return your call
on the next business day. Not sure if this will help but it may.

I believe it is actually a law that anything that a child must wear
and be around has to be non-toxic

children's clothes contain dyes too .... to be sure, next time you do
your wash get some of those Color Catcher cloths... put one in the
load of laundry and it sucks up excess dyes that bleed out of the
fabric.

Also make sure he or she wasn't perhaps playing with markers.

as for getting the stains out... to be honest, I'd say just switch
diaper brands if you're 100% sure that's the cause and give it a week
or two. The kinds of soaps that would take it off immediately aren't
the products you want to be putting on your child's thighs anyway...
they'd be likely to be abrasive and would prolly hurt the kid.

and to be honest, the best solution i've ever found to getting ink off
of skin was human sweat. i use to get my fingers really inky from
using fountain pens. working out was the best way to get the ink off.

since your child's a bit young to start a workout program the best
thing to do is just wait. it's not going to stay on the skin forever
- it'll wear off

I don't think they'd use toxic dye on diapers.

Huggies just launched a line of diapers called Pure & Natural which
have the same fit but are dye-free - might want to give those a try.

I get paint/dye all over my hands on a semi-regular basis. It only
dyes a few surface skin cells, so all you have to do is wait a while
and those cells will slough off. Do all Huggies do this? My sister
swore by Pampers, so if they all have the blue dye you might want to
try those.

I do hope they offer you a refund or at least a coupon for a free box
of another pack of Huggies that don't have the dye.

This was interesting so I decided to look it up.
Most children are able to use the product without incident, however
some do react to the dye they use.
It appears that in some cases, the children respond with rash or
dermatitis, and in others, a small blue stain. Not every product is
for everyone, and others love this product and others hate the dye. I
cannot say for sure, but I would assume that the dye is non-toxic. I
do think you are owed a refund as the product is obviously not working
properly.

On the issue of getting it out, it reminds me of Tie-Dying at summer
camp when I was younger. It was IMPOSSIBLE to get that stuff off your
hands. You just had to wait a few days for it to fade out and finally
wash away. This may be the case with your child - with time it will
fade out.
