I've been thinking about this a lot for some reason. I came up with this:
What if the little boy waited until mom/dad/whoever was watching him went into the bathroom. THEN the kid gets the chair, puts it on the couch. Maybe, maybe not, misses/over shoots (believe me, it happens!) and then the watcher comes in. The boy gets in trouble and while the watcher puts the clean cover on and the dirty one in the wash, the kid is in a time out or something.
I am just guessing here. I haven't seen the ad. But I am working on potty training my 2 1/2 year old son. And there has been a few times where he wants to sit on his little potty chair in the hall way or the living room.
I think what Ikea (LOVE that store btw!) is trying to say is that when a mess happens, you can take the cover off and clean toss it in the wash.
Don't let the ad fool you though. We have a couch and love seat from Ikea and the covers are a PAIN in the butt to put on!

Taste is subjective.
Some like Chianti, others a warm Bordeaux, yet some others think White Zinfindel is where it is at.
What I am eluding to is the "target audience factor" They are targeting parents of young children. I am assuming you are not in that "zone" ergo this commercial is disturbing to you.
You are in control of this, you can change the channel, or better yet, do not buy this couch... while it is not defective in any way (so far as we know) it does not fit your needs.

so obviously you and your husband have NO kids??!! Because IF you did you would completely see the humor in that commercial, and probably run out immediately to buy that sofa AND several covers!!!!

I wish I had the wasable cover on my couch! I bought the micorfiber lovesea/couch combo from Sofa Mart. Is a light tan color and shows dirt really bad. They say you can clean it with the special cleaner that they provide, however, what they DONT tell you is that it leaves water marks. I gave up after the new baby hosed it down during a recent diaper change, the oldest grand baby spilling her grape juice, ketchup, and anything else you can imagine.. When I get my carpets cleaned I will have them clean the furniture too.
Note: When I purchased my furniture I was living alone. Empty nest. Then one of the baby birds came home with babies of her own. Now my empty nest is filled with diapers, bottles hidden under the couch, cookie crumbs in my bed, wet spots that I dont want to know where they came from, and spit up (soy formula really reeks).....And you know what? I would not trade it for the world....

Wow, if this commercial grossed you out I can't imagine how you deal with regular prime time TV.

I found the commercial moderately funny. I do think though that the choice of a white cover for the second cover was a little silly. I mean, what if the kid does the same thing again?

Like I have said before, you cannot please everyone!! I agree with others here who have said that there are more important things to worry about or be offended by. Anyway, we are all sitting here talking about Ikea, so I guess the commercial is working!!

I haven't seen it by your description alone makes me feel nauseous. I hope they pull it because it sounds disgusting, not something I'd like to visualize while relaxing and watching television.

Maybe I just have a lowbrow sense of humor, but I kind of chuckled at this one. Still, if it bothers you you are absolutely right in letting them know about it. Companies often don't know if their ads hit or miss until consumers give them feedback. So good on you. :)

I haven't seen this but I love the idea of removeable covers rather than slipcovers. It's better than having to buy vinyl or drag out the bissell to clean the upholsery.

I haven't seen this commercial, but I don't think it could upset me anymore than the one where the kid squirts chocolate syrup all over an entire white living room. I think it was an ad for Stanley Steamer. That commercial made me cringe. A kid putting his potty seat on the couch makes more sense than a child deliberately destroying a living room. I may feel differently when I actually see the IKEA commercial, and I can understand how it can be offensive.

I think this commercial is hilarious! Of course, you have your right to voice your opinion. But mine is the complete opposite. I laughed my butt off, and even described it at work today!

I think that it was unneccessary to use this imagery for their ad. While I find the commercials that diaper companies use acceptable (such as the one with the water hose effect in the dining room), there are so many other (and some more effective) ways IKEA could have communicated the washable message.
