I've got this marble studio in Tuscany, Italy, and often take on college art foreign studies program students as apprentices. I don't charge them, and put them up, feed them etc., in exchange for them helping me to make sculptures. Half the day is spent on my stuff, and the other half on theirs, using my tools, marble, and work areas. I help them as much as they need it. It works for both of us...I get free work from them, and they learn as they do it, and then get to try out their own ideas on their own projects. It's rare that they stay any less than a year, and usually leave with enough finished, high quality work for a one man show. I'd like to think we both benefit. |
