Businesses are allowed to add additional days as paid holidays; I worked in places that did it for extra holidays, including the day after Xmas and Thanksgiving, and New Year's and Christmas Eve days. Maybe they were simply using it as an excuse for raising prices, and maybe not, but you've jumped to conclusions without proof.
