First, I'm sorry about your father. That is always hard and you probably were not even thinking about the ticket during a time like that. Unfortunately, a year is a year and it expired. You had the year to use it and if you felt you were not going to be able to use it, you should have contacted the airline. I have never known any airline to refund a customer for an expired ticket.
