Hate to break it to you but Best Buy has a restocking fee also. Most major retailers have it for electronics. That was because people were buying high end items like digital cameras or a big screen TV using them once (for an event or the big game) and then returning them.

Why didn't you just exchange the items for working ones? There is no restocking fee for an exchange.
