Now THIS is crappy customer service. Literally.
The employee should have cleaned up the mess since the pet's owner failed to. If PetSmart is going to welcome animals in its stores, they need to be prepared that not every customer (human or animal) is going to be on his/her best behavior.
Good letter... and it sounds like you handled the situation perfectly. And I'm really glad you didn't step in it.
