I agree with your annoyance. Here's a tip which may help:
When you have your browser open, click on TOOLS, then MANAGE ADD-ONS, then ENABLE/DISABLE ADD-ONS. A list of browser extensions will open. Click on the entry for SHOCKWAVE FLASH OBJECT and click DISABLE.

This will remove the type of advertising described in the post, and all the annoying 'flashy' type ads.

Occasionally you will hit a site where you will want to see the Flash content. You can easily re-enable it on the fly.
