I agree this sounds shady

Whenever I take my car in for work... they give me a quoted price, but ... if the price is going to end up being more than that, by their own policy they had to call me to let me know.
oh but that was sears. and they always gave me good service
yeah, i'd say that sounds suspicious... and i'd suggest contacting someone about it... not just planet feedback, but perhaps some legal entity
and... just because you're car is dismantled does not mean you're required to get service there.
I took my car in once for an inspection... i forget where, but my car failed. the store quoted me over $300 to get it fixed and I said no.
Pricy auto place: You'll get a "rejection" stick on your inspection.
Me: That's fine.
(the sticker basically meant i could go home, to a repair store, or to an inspection station.. and no where else)
I left that place and drove directly to Sears (the same sears i always went to). They fixed it for almost half the price. I picked it up and drove to a new inspection station and passed.
Always shop around. Yes I know sometimes you feel like you're stuck, but... don't let them corner you. Also... sometimes it's better to go with a bigger chain that has a better reputation.
or one with a good word-of-mouth rep.
had another repair shop I use to go to because it was literally across the road from where i once worked. Drop it off in the morning, then pick it up after work... and everyone at work praised the shop. And yes, it was good work, and cheaper than the dealer.
