Re: American Express Lowered My Credit Limit Following Payment
by Kenogal - Posted Tue June 9, 2009 @ 9:59 AM

Okay, I'm feeling a little better after reading all these posts.

A couple of years ago, I paid my AMEX card down $2500 for a cruise to Mexico. Imagine my embarassment when the purser's desk called to let me know that I didn't have any credit line on my account. I had to call AMEX from the ship and was told that my credit line had been dropped because of one of their "occasional reviews" of my credit-worthiness. But, I kept on trusting them anyhow.....

A couple of weeks ago, I paid off ALL of my credit cards, including $14,000 to AMEX. Surprise! Yesterday, I received a letter from them letting me know that they had completely closed down my account and that "this action may have a negative bearing on your credit score". What???? I, too, have a credit score well over 700 which will probably go much higher now that I have paid off all of my cards. Of course, I dream of the day that AMEX comes groveling to get me to open an account and I simply say "you've got to be kidding".

There are better rewards cards out there and also companies that treat their customers with the respect they've earned. Thanks for letting me vent.
