They didn't "change" the pledge of allegiance.

"Under God" wasn't added to the pledge until the 1950s, almost a full 200 years after this country was founded. The same goes with "In God We Trust" on the currency.

My personal feeling is that having both of these phrases is unconstitutional as it is the government "favoring" one religion over another, when the two should remain seperate.

P.S. How would removing that phrase "offend" you?
