Next time you are in a situation like this, split up the items yourself. Take half of your shopping cart and have it rung up on your Target card. When that transaction is complete, take the rest of your items and have them rung up on you Visa card. At worst, this will slightly annoy the customer behind you (because they would have to wait for two separate transactions), but otherwise the purchase should be foolproof.
