I guess I don't get why you need AmEx. I mean, there are credit cards out there that don't charge an annual fee, right? And so long as you pay your balance in full each month (as AmEx's charge card requires), you don't end up paying any interest.

AmEx needs to charge a fee because they don't earn any interest from their charge accounts.
