1) Cell phone pricing history.

Back when contracts were for 1 year the free phones were usually $200 or less.

Phones now cost 300-600 easily. So you're not going to get it for free just for signing up for a 1-year plan.



2) No one is really stopping you from upgrading. You can upgrade any time you want. Just not for free.
