I have on rare occassions sent back meals that were not to my liking. If you are polite about it, no one will mind. In fact, the idea that the waiter might "mess up your order," is more than a touch paranoid.
I have said it so many times on this site, and I stand by it. If you experience a problem at a specific location, at least give the location a chance to fix the problem. Just imagine, if you had been able to speak up for yourself at the time you might have been able to enjoy your meal. Instead, you chose to sit quietly and meekly eat only your salad while paying for the rubbery crab without a word.
The fact that you lacked the courage to say anything doesn't entitle you to freebies from corporate, although I wouldn't be surprised if they sent you a gift card and a form letter. It must work, or there wouldn't be so many of these letters.
