Ok, some of you may have noticed that your comments are now missing from this letter. Here's why.
Despite the merits (or lack thereof) of this letter, it is not appropriate to refer to the letter writer as an "idiot" or a "scammer" or telling him to "get a life." The problem with commenting angrily to letters like this is that it gives visitors to the site the impression that that's what this site is all about - bashing people. It's important that people take the site seriously. That can't happen if people are afraid of being attacked for expressing their opinions.
I know you guys don't like letters like this one. I don't either. In fact, I recommended having it deleted. But here's the thing - there is absolutely no way to prove that this guy is scamming. None. And since it can't be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that it's made up, there's no grounds for deleting it. Removing letters just because we don't like them takes the site down a slippery slope I don't think anyone wants to go down.
So all I'm asking you to do is please, stop resorting to personal attacks in your comments. There's plenty of clever and non-abrasive ways to show your displeasure with a letter. We want this site to be known for its respectful, thought-provoking and witty commentary by its intelligent and polite community of posters, not just a place where people can go to slam each other.
