They found out that their flight was going to be delayed at around 1:00 in the afternoon. Let's assume from Houston to Dallas it's a 2.5 hour flight, so they boarded the plane no later than 10:00am for the first leg of their journey, which means they had to be at the airport around 8:30am.

I also think that the problem comes in with her interpretation of flight times. She says the flight was delayed until 5:30, and later on says she showed up at the gate at 5:30. Well yes, no wonder it was too late for them to board the plane!!
